What year did ford start putting the d44 in Early bronco's, and what year did they stop putting in the d44??

d44's started in '70 1/2 in EB's. '70 1/2 - '75 are all drum brakes. '76-'77 are disc. all are low pinion.

d44's were offered in fullsize bronco's in '78-'79. all are disc and high pinion, but the radius arm mounts were cast into the housing. and since they are on a fullsize vehicle, they are wider.

'80+ d44's in fullsize bronco's are ttb.

i'm assuming your asking about solid axles.

Pretty sure 71 and a half was first year for d44 . :flipoff2:

Are the radius arm mounts on an EB NOT cast into the housing? i.e.. are they bolt on or something?

The "ears" are welded on an EB D44.

'71 1/2 was the first for the D44:)

If it is a 71 and a 1/2 through a 75, (d44 with drum brakes), can you take the brakes off a 76-77 and replace the drums???:D

Or do you just need to buy a whole kit??

ok, so i was caught in the middle of a brain fart. 71 1/2 appears to be the magic number. good call on the "ears" too, i just couldnt for the life of me think of that work when i was replying.

sure you can replace the drum brakes with disc, but you have to go from the knuckle out.

i'm not the best to recommend what parts you need though. there are a couple different ways of doing it supposedly.

If you want disc brakes, you can do the chevy swap and retain your Knuckles, or do the F150 and replace everything including the knuckle. The F150 knuckles mount the Tierod lower then the stock EB drum knuckles, so thats a small disadvantage, you also have to buy a bushing that BCBroncos sells to adapt the stock EB tie rod to the F150 knuckle.

What about a front disc brake from a D44 1980 Dodge 1/2 ton with 5-5.5 set up? This guy is selling the whole front axle rotor to rotor for about $ 200.

Can I just bolt this one to my 71 EB D44 knuckle? Or I have to use the Dodge knuckle too and bolt right onto my front axle?

If you're going to do the brake swap, do it with the chevy parts. You get better brakes inreturn, none of that crappy ford stuff. Ford brakes suck!
