: Pics of the new setup

While you all where busy discussing rules, and SUA's I was out testing the new setup. A big thumbs up from me, did 70 on the way down on the freeway, and then wheeled the new setup.

Now where is that clown that would take an SUA over an SOA?

Last year, my door was into the tree stump, this time the wider axles pushed me out away from the stump and no body damage. I did find out that I do need to extend the extended brake lines :(

Friday started off a little rough, 10 minutes into the first run, I dropped into a hole and dumped the fan into the rad. Sheared off a blade, and opened up a couple of holes in the rad. Made it back to camp, ran out to Kragen for an electric fan, then ace for a torch and solder. Four hours on Sat and it was patched up and running, thanks Mark. There is no saving the rad, without a recore.

On Sat Josh C laid his rig down on the side in a mud puddle, I don't have pics but he should soon. Amanda got her Toy into the stump and pushed in the pass door, then she fired the alt in the mud later.

Weekend toll, one roll (Josh C), one rad (Me), one alt (Amanda), and a cheap pair of Pro-comp hubs (Josh C)

Here is Josh in the Frame Twister, he ended up needing a tug.

Pic of Amanda making it through the Frame Twister. Ask Josh why she made it, and he did not:question:

what kind of lame ass man made obstacle is that?

I hope JoshC had some type of mechanical failure that kept him from making it thru there, Kind of looks like a vegetable garden with freshly pulled beds.

I think they are slimy, buried logs looking suspiciously 100" apart... not easy..

looks :rainbow: though.

Hmm, SOA looks good Joe... ever figure out what the front axle was?? The spacing looks good. Scout outers or ford?

:rasta: If you don't know what you are talking about, shut the fawk up. It is easy if you drive at an angle and have lockers. I didn't and don't. I walked right through the flower bed in the pic. It's just the last set. The shit is so dug out I had about a 2.5' slimy shit pile right up against my front and rear tires at the same time. :flipoff2:

It looks a lot easier than it really is. The logs are spaced is such a way that, no matter what wheelbase you have, at some point both front and rear tire will be up against those slimmy poles. The mud was as slick as toad snot!

So what was the cause of the fan having your Rad for lunch?
Frame twist?
Bad motor mounts?
Rad support rot?

Bad motor mounts and a three foot drop into a hole while heading down hill. I'll have new rad, motor mounts, and tranny mounts before the next run. I'll also be adding a pusher fan or two.

Maybe
Yes
no

Joe,
You have to take pics of the surgery! It was enough solder, you could consider it a chrome radiator :flipoff2:

One of the obstacles used for the top truck challenge. Rubi and Josh are correct the logs are slimy, and spaced perfectly to catch the wheelbase of about any rig. If you don't hit the logs at an angle your not going to make it.

They are being developed! I'll scan them tomorrow. My 8 yr old was with me in the pass seat. We tiped on my side and he was just hanging up above me staring at me trying to unbuckle himself.
Mark pulled him out in record time! Thanks Mark!!! We got home last night and Jake asked me what my favorite part of the trip was. Then he told me his favorite part was when we rolled! If he's not already, he'll grow up to be a pirate fo sho!

Just right up above Area5. We were blasting through... I tried to stay high... my ass end slid left into a deep rut... i steered into the roll... that dropped my front end in and we completed the landing :D

No problem! I wish I had a pic of you trying to hold Jake up. You handled the situation well!

My only regret is that we didn't have a video of the event. It was tooo coool:smokin:

My only regret is that I didn't allow Jake to provide us with a photo of him giving the Pirate solute next to the Scout on it's side. I would have allowed it this one time. I'd have framed it! :flipoff2:

New stockers, or RPT motor / trans mounts?

I got my rad from Hughes.. maybe shoulda gone with the 4-row instead of the 3-row high-eff.. :(

One of these days I'm going to get around to scooping the hood for more airflow through the rad.

How much did it run you? I requested a quote for both a 3 row HE, and a 4 row. Why don't you like the 3 row HE, not enough cooling? In the summer months I wheel in 100 degree weather.

IH ONLY. Mike Ismail.

SSS, GRT, Anything Scout, LLofLA, etc. all resell the RPT mounts.

They're $75 each for the motor mounts, and my 727 trans mount was.. $45?

I still have stock motor mounts in my trail rig, with a new poly Light Line trans mount under the T19 - $35, IIRC. I've been going through one of the poly mounts a year, give or take.. ;-)

The 345 motor mounts were drilled before I put the motor in so I can cable the engine in place for safe keeping.. but haven't gotten around to it. Racer should probably be chained down, too..

Joe

$250 range for the 3-row HE.

I tried the 3-row because I didn't think I needed more, and to make sure the fan stayed away from the rad.

I think part of my cooling problem is the change to a clutched fan. I put a brand new WP, clutch, and fan on when I built the motor. At idle on a so-so warm day the temp will run right up to 240.

At speed? No problems. Only at idle - and this is WITH a Robert Shaw thermostat.

In Moab I had my windshield washer re-routed to function as a cool-down bottle to spray water on the rad to keep the engine temps down. Not my idea of a fun day of wheelin'.

I've tried advancing and retarding the timing, changing jets, etc.. didn't seem to make any significant improvements - it just runs hot at idle.

Fun part is once it gets good n' hot it starts to surge from the fuel boiling in the filter.. *sigh*

First thing I'm going to try is going back to a fixed fan. I'm not too worried about highway noise these days. :D Only thing keeping me from changing the fan out is it was such a b*tch to get the clutch fan in there in the first place.. (short bolts between the clutch and WP and not much room to work)

I do run a shroud, too.

So.. try the fixed fan and 3-row and see how it likes it.. scoop the hood to let more air out, see how it likes it.. then if it's still hot, try the 4-row.

OTOH, I also kinda want to order a new radiator for the racer (of all things, IT runs a 2-row with a 10+:1 304, no shroud, fixed fan).. after about 15 minutes of non stop throttle it hovers around 230-240 during a typical summer day.

It has a lot more "ventilation" though - hole in the hood, no inner fenders..

If I order a new rad for the racer, I'm thinking I order the 4-row HE for the trail rig, and take the 3-row HE and put it into the racer.. along with a pusher fan to help cool it at idle (while staging for the drags.. when the starter gets hot enough I worry it might not turn the motor over).

We'll see.

I use an angled Ratchet Wrench to get in there, with the shroud unbolted. Still tears up the ol' knuckles tho.:D

solid steel? I guess I should've just bought some 2x3 tubing and called it good then.. Wow.

Maybe when I lower the engine and move it back I'll just skip the whole "bushing"/motor mount issue and bolt the engine brackets straight to the frame brackets... :)

That's why I said HUH does not make any sense. I want confirmation that there is indeed poly in the mounts.
