Anyone have a dustshield for the SM465 bellhousing? I wonder where I can get one and if just any ole bowtie dustshield will work. Anyone know? Anyone have a spare they want to sell me?

If you don't mind, post the part# and the price when you find out. I need one also, but some one told me the local dealer was proud of them.

why do you want one?
after a stick pushed mine into the flywheel I tossed it and havent missed it
let the crap that gets in fall out much easier

Sure, for a pre-86 engine, you'll want P/N 340254 -> Delear Cost = $15.18. For a post-85 engine, you'll want P/N 15521936 -> Dealer Cost = $50+. Since these are special order and can't be returned, I went with the $15 one to see if I can make it fit. If I can't, I'll order the post-85 one. BTW, I have an 87 TBI which is going to bolt up to an 82 SM465. I will let you know how I make out.

Also, for those who want to know...GM pilot bearings are the same, which is P/N 14061685 -> Dealer Cost = $12.22

why do you want one?

Well, for starters, you won't have stuff falling out because with a shield stuff wouldn't be gettin in there! :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Dust sheilds on a sm465 are just like shock boots.

They fill up with mud real easy:p , but it sucks trying to get it out.:mad3:

I have run two without dust shields with no adverse affects
One was with the old cast iron bellhousing that didn't cover the bottom 1/3rd of the flywheel. It was a lot easier to clean the mud out.

I have one of the old cast iron bell housings and no cover.
I have not had any troubles with it being wide open.
I have another bellhousing that is for a hydraulic clutch, it is a fully enclosed bell housing.
Does anyone know if these aluminum ones are any good for a 4x4 or are they mainly used in a 2x4.

stuff always gets in
the trick is to make it easy to get out once it is in
very similar to backing plates on drum brakes that 'keep stuff out'
you will never 'keep stuff out' but sure 'keeps stuff in' good

so is that the bushing or bearing pn?

Bearing. I was told by the parts guy that they (GM) don't make the bushings anymore and that all models use the same bearing. He could be blowin smoke up my ass...but I'll take his word this time round.

I'm on the East coast and have always run with a bellhousing cover. I will chat with my club members to see what they run and go from there. You guys may be right, but I also plan on running my rig in the rain and snow. It will not be trailered.

Here's what it looks like today...

And here's before the body/engine/trans/tcase was installed...

sure would save those Cheepers a lot of time n effort if they would just start with a vehicle that has a good motor n tranny n trans case n frame n difs
might be quicker to list the good parts...

OK, I picked up the $15 dustshield and it don't work. The difference between the two versions is in the oil seal (1-piece vs. 2-piece). So, anyone who wants/needs a brand new dustsheild for pre-85 engines, drop me a line. $10 +shipping and it's yours.

Dam TYS, your building a 4x4 not show truck(i hope). Stop painting it so pretty. i think I can see my reflection in the frame rail. The entire thing better be brown within a week after completion! :D .

Hey I got an 85 K5 with a leaking rear main seal. Is it the one piece or the 2 piece? i know you got to pull the crank to replace the 1 piece, but only loosen the main for the 2 piece. The 2 piece was the post 85 right? :(

Don't worry.......I'll have it buried the first time out, for sure! It's always nice (and easier) to put things together when they are clean. I painted the whole thing in POR15 and then top coated it, all before I decided to go with a bowtie drivetrain. So now it's getting all mucked up with cutting this, torching that, those c-clamps did a nice job too, twisting the paint away. hahaha...

To answer your question, Yes, 86+ engines (post-85) have the 1piece rear main, so Pre-86 (85 and older) ones have the 2 piece.

Good luck. (Need a dustshield?? heh)

Ahh, I am just jealous. I remember when mine looked like that, before 3 years of mudding and a drunken rampage to see if the thing will float in salt water  . I tried to repaint it after that but the rust had already set in :( . Good luck getting rid of your dust shield.
