: Would a 14 bolt/D60 be overkill for 38's?
attachcurrie 03-11-2002, 08:04 AM I'm looking at running about 38's once I get done, that tire size suites the wheeling around here perfect. So would a 14 bolt/D60 be overkill for these tires and my slightly built 4.0? Would an 9 inch be more suited?
TIA
1TONTJ 03-11-2002, 08:14 AM Hell no, works great. Just shave the bottom as much as possible, or they will plow.
I have that. Some pics of the build up are at:

1TONTJ 03-11-2002, 08:16 AM Oh, and as for the Ford 9" axle. I have all the clearance, with WAY more strength, for WAY less money :flipoff2:
14bolts rule! ;)
Phil
bigdude 03-11-2002, 08:45 AM I hope not:D
At least my Jeep better not think so
attachcurrie 03-11-2002, 08:49 AM 1TONTJ: What did you get your 14 bolt from? (Vechicle/Year) What is the width and how much does it weight?
Thanks!
clc900 03-11-2002, 09:08 AM Get a 14bolt from a GM cab/chassis dually. They are about 62-63" wide. Some came with 4.56 gears. Swap out the drums for disks and you save alot of weight. It will still be HEAVIER than a 9" but as I see it that is the only advantage. But that is only if you are trying to shave weight. No doubt about it the 14bolt is very strong and very cheap.
attachcurrie 03-11-2002, 09:13 AM Perfect! My D44 front is 62 so that would be right in the same width range.
Does anyone have any spec. info on the 14 bolt vs. 9 inch like tube size, shaft size, etc. And how much are they on average from junkyards?
clc900 03-11-2002, 09:21 AM I picked mine up for $100. The axle shafts are 30 spline, 1.5" full floaters. The housing is much thicker than the 9". 9" stuff can be built very strong but it also costs a bunch. You can get a detroit for the 14bolt for under $300. The disks are an easy upgrade, and compared to the 9" the pinion is higher (but isnt saying a whole lot when compared to the 9" )
attachcurrie 03-11-2002, 09:25 AM Are there upgrade shafts to move to 35 spline?
Does anyone sell a disk conversion or what parts from what axles can be used to convert?
1TONTJ 03-11-2002, 09:29 AM They are actually BIGGER than a 35 spline D60 shaft. I think they are 1.69". VERY strong stuff.
Weight - very heavy. Helps keep me from rolling ;)
Mine center section, and carrier are from a 2001 Chevy fullsize.
Phil
attachcurrie 03-11-2002, 09:34 AM Why did you use a center section and carrier are from a 2001 Chevy fullsize?
Any clue on weight? Like 400 lbs?

You really aren't gonna need to worry about updating the shafts... TRUST ME. If you are really concearned about them (NO NEED) then there are a few companies that make replacement shafts but you WILL NOT NEED THEM.
Hop over to the chevy board and look for Shaker. He makes an AWESOME disc brake kit for them. He's over here too, killer nice guy and can hook you up.

Came from a sponsor ;)
I would guess with the discs and full floater over 400 lbs easy.

clc900 03-11-2002, 10:05 AM Do a search. There have been lots of discussion on 14 bolts lately. Somebody weighed there disked 14 bolt and I believe it was just under 400lbs. You wont break an axleshaft and even if you do the yards have lots of cheap replacements. Lots of guys run these with 44 boggers and big blocks without problems.
Rock Taxi 03-11-2002, 12:00 PM The only problem with the 14 bolt is the limitation on low gears for it. Now a Dana 60 or 70....... I have 6.17's and am sure eyeing those 7.17's.

1TONTJ 03-11-2002, 12:05 PM True, 5.13 is as low as you go on a 14 bolt.

Brawler 03-11-2002, 01:12 PM Does anyone have a pic of a ff 14 bolt with 35's? Want to see what kinda ground clearence it has.
Let me put it this way, I went from a 10 bolt with 31's to a 14 with 36's. I didn't gain much at ALL for ground clearance.
Charles Aarons 03-11-2002, 04:10 PM 2.5 ton axles are overkill in the sense that the added strength doesn't counterbalance the added weight and gearing limitation. 1 ton axles on a Jeep are slight overkill but not badly so, and on a 1 ton crewcab with 39s not at all overkill (me). They'll allow you to jump to 39s, 42s, 44s without worries. Re gearing options: there's always the Atlas transfer case and other superlow range options nowadays.

Yeah, click below on my site. If that's not a good enough pic I'll email you a better one. The tires are 35 SSR's.............

Don't forget granny low trannys as an option. I will be going to an NV4500 in the late fall (with a 5.9L).

You're going to like that. My friend just put one in his TJ (he got it from a '97). The wiring was a pain in the ass but that motor is one torquey SOB. I can put you in touch with him when you get around to the swap. Very knowledgable and good at explaining things.

Thanks man, I would appreciate that.

You're right. I DO want to shave it. As soon as the tranny is back in it's getting cut. I've gotta run in 2 weeks that I'm rying to get ready for, that's one of the things on the list :D
