I have a B&M deep pan that I would like to put a trans temp bung in before installing.
Can anyone give me guidance on where I should put it so I can have it welded in before pulling the old pan off.

My TH400 came with a Moroso pan with two bungs in the front (facing the engine)

Front is best. pass side could be close to drive shaft. Drivers side will get into the shift linkage.

Since it is a deep pan can I just locate it on the vertical surface just above the bottom or, is it not deep enough to do this without looking at the actual transmission components inside the pan?

That's how mine are.

why not just use one of the transmission pressure taps. this was just covered real recently so maybe try searching.

Your readings on them will be largely case temp and not necessarily fluid temp, on mine it amounted to approx 35 degrees difference. Enough to make you think you're roasting a tranny. I guess it's ok as long as you know what the difference in temp is. I still have mine plugged into the pressure tap, just didn't see any sense in moving it once I found out what was going on.
