Look in the webbing near the bottom right side of the diff cover. There will be a number cast into this area; it may or may not have some other stuff after it. Dual rear wheel - D70. Single rear wheel, probably 14b (in 77). It could've been a 60 someone swapped in, however; GM used single-wheel D60's around '72 and there are still a lot of them out there. Also see here: http://coloradok5.com/axleguide.shtml

There are gm factory 4.56 gears in a 14 bolt.

Yeah, and D70's came with factory Dana/Spicer gears in that ratio also. What's your point?

I thought he was questioning that it might be a 14 bolt, but he didn't think 14 bolts had that gear ratio. My bad ,I'll shut up now

Check the number cast into the webbing. Then, if you want to know more, get the bill of materials number off the axle shaft tube and put in in here: http://www2.dana.com/expert/wc.dll?DSD~deabill~2

If there is no 60, or 70 cast into the webing, look on the side of the casting. If nothing there you can pull cover, If the ring gear fills the center, and is notched on the bottom=70. No notch 60. Also unless it was swaped in GM did use the 70.

yep there is a number cast into the webbing it says "70" and there is a number on my "60A" too...anyways, moisture got into the axle, so it is junk :(
