: Blazer th350 to th400 swap questions?????
Big-B 08-29-2005, 10:00 PM Well after the bigblock went in the th350 didnt last too long. I had anticipated this and had a th400 on hand any how. So I got the 32 spline input for my 203 and thougt I was all good until I realized that I need the short 6 1/2 output shaft for my th400. No big deal.
I found one and have been getting ready to purchase it and have the trans gone through at the same time Until today I realize that the body of the th400 is 3 inches longer than the th350 and now I will have to get my D-shafts shortened and lengthend AGAIN :mad3:
Now to my question (sorry for the long story) Since my th400 came off of a 205 at this point am I better off going with the 205 (yes I know the strength differences, but I also like my 2wd low in the 203). I guess my real question is what is the length differences between a 203 and 205 I.E if I went with the 205 at this point what would my d-line lengths do? I know it is lame just trying to not redo my d-lines again....
Thanks in advance
Krazy Krakker 08-30-2005, 02:29 AM :( You will still need to lengthen your drive lines, but if you stay with the 203 and you've already shelled the th350, it won't be long till you fling the chain in the case and wish you'd have gotten the 205 to go with all that 1ton sh*t. (trust me, I've already done ALL the wrong things first to find out my hopes didn't equal reality.) If your not worried about the weight (and have the money) the 203 range box would be nice to go low on the gears. They made the 205s that bolt up to the TH400 in a fixed yoke and slip yoke design. The slip yoke ones aren't bad if you have enough rear lenght but bad if its short and lifted over 6". The mud runners like the slip ones becuase they have wheel base and can change them quickly when broken. If your on the rocks get the fiked yoke one. If you want a slip yoke and can afford the shipping or pick it up, I know some one that would sell for around $150-175. Slip yoke drive shafts are easier to come by as well and are cheaper to make to lenght becuase you just find one thats long and have it cut.
Big-B 08-30-2005, 07:54 PM So are you saying that the 205 is shorter than 3 inches compared to a 203?
Krazy Krakker 08-31-2005, 12:17 AM It's pretty close to 3" (depends too on slip or fixed yoke) but you might want to call a transmission shop or see if you can get some tape measurements from a junk yard or something. The best thing you can do if you've got your mind set on the 205 is to bolt it up and see where your drive lines measure out at. The front will probably be OK, and you might get lucky with the back, but don't sue me if you need to call the drive shaft fairy. :shaking:
BozoWise 08-31-2005, 01:25 PM I have both GM transfer cases sitting on the floor for a doubler. The 203 is 22" and the 205 is 16" This is from the front of the trans adapter to center of rear yoke. Both models having a fixed output shaft.
Don't think twice and dump to 203. Save the range box for a doubler later though.
Big-B 08-31-2005, 09:39 PM Krakker dont worry I wont sue you fairy :rainbow: :flipoff2:
Bozo that my friend is the exact answer I was looking for and many  to you thanks alot!!!!!!!
So lets refresh there is a 6 inch diffence between the 205 and 203 so with the 3 added inches from the th400 I should be somewhat back to center On the rear shaft.
Now to find an adapter a 205 and crossmember :smokin:
Krazy Krakker 09-01-2005, 12:09 PM Your original post never stated that you had a 205 t-case, thats why I suggested getting some measurements. I could have given you ones from both styles of 205s, after diggng them out of the shed but it's always better to measure for your self. I would't have a 203 around to measure cuase I don't waste space keeping crap. but I'm glad you got your question answered from someone that does. hope the 205 works out well for you. And at the price of a doubler, Iwould just get lower gears. Less weight, more practical.
Call me when you're ready to paint your drive shafts PINK. :rainbow: :flipoff:

Boy what hostility we have here :D Oh and to hyjack this thread. What do you do when you have the lowest gears made for a 14bolt and dana 60??? Might be reconsidering the worth of a doubler. Plus my ride never hits more then 40mph anyways :D
darren250r 09-01-2005, 11:05 PM I would suggest going with a slip yoke t-case. It will perform well with your short wheel base and lift. As a matter of fact, I can make you a sweet deal on a slip yoke rear drive shaft and a front shaft with a flange t-case mount. You might also consider getting a ring to re-clock your t-case and lower the front output 6", it may save you from having to have a new drive shaft made and it will definitly improve your front shaft angles since you aint got no high pinion. Keep it real.
Krazy Krakker 09-06-2005, 01:40 AM I didn't mean to sound hostile, my view of the 203 is like many others, they are weak and heavy. Yes the range box is good for the doubler and it would be good for a heavy style rig. Obviously bozowise probably thinks the same becuase he has it out (probably to make a doubler out of the 205) My vehicle is short, that's why I need to keep my driveline to a minimum lenght. But like my signiture says, "Gremlin built 8 to 1 low range CUSTOM built transfer case" I could crawl up a wall with 3:07s and still bust 80 mph on 42s. All in the same space as a stock 205. :p
Big-B 09-06-2005, 09:11 PM Well I just picked up a 205 with a fixed yoke. It has the 10 spline input so I am going to try to trade for a 32 spline or just pick up the input gear and an adapter. Thanks for all the input negative, positive or just :rainbow: darren :flipoff2: Anywase  to all and anyone with some parts let me know thanks ......................B
