May J10 wont start for me. The power is intermittent. Sometimes you can turn the key and the dash will light up like normal. Then other times you turn the key and you get nothing. WHen it has power it starts and runs great, does anyone have any ideas?

check your dash wiring. more specifically, the wiring of the ammeter. might just bypass it and hook up a voltmeter. the ammeter and fusible link on that line cause lots of problems as they get older, and when they go bad it can end with a call to the fire department.

Check your battery connections and ensure they are clean and making contact.

So how would I go about finding the ammenter? or hooking it up like you said?

The easier check is rock-rod's, but I kinda figured you checked that. ...but I could be very wrong on that..
The ammeter is on the dash panel, it's the gauge on the lower right hand side. It reads Amps and is marked -40 to +40 with a 0 point in the middle.
If I remember the wiring correctly off the top of my head, the hot wire off the alternator runs through the engine compartment harness and passes through the firewall on the driver's side, then passes through the ammeter, and then gets split into hot for the rest of the vehicle. The last I poked at that wire was 4-5 years ago, so check a wiring diagram.
The ammeter sees nearly all of the voltage for the vehicle, and over time, many fail and catch fire. Mine failed, but didn't burn the vehicle down, but it did kill my alternator and cause a lot of headache because it did it many hours from home.
To disable, you pull the wiring off the posts on the back of the ammeter and splice them together. This is an important connection, so do it properly, not with some quick crimp connection that'll rattle free in a month or two.
It is a good time to find the fusible link (a small piece of wire that is lighter gage than the rest, theoretically it'll burn up before the rest of the wire, making it a fuse of sorts) and replace it with a resetable circuit breaker. Check the wire for cracks on the insulation, and if it looks to be in bad shape, replace it with the same gage wire.
This was a relatively common problem with FSJs that was discussed back in the mailing list days, probably some info on IFSJA about it.

this is what i did and it worked for me. The ammeter is notorious for burning up and catching fire. got to IFSJA.org and SEARCH in the tech section. this has been brought up numerous times.

Thanks, I found some great help on there. Thanks
