So I was at the JY before Katrina hit, looking thru the axle heap.
Not much there, I've picked out the only D60 in it.
But I did find a D44 that had 3 ubolts and 2 studs like a D60. I almost got excited when I saw it, but quickly realized it was just a 44.
I've heard these came from Dodges, but what years had this setup? It didn't have outers (just the housing) so I don't know if it was 1/2 or 3/4 ton. Also, does this have any advantages over a normal D44?
please help enlighten the dumb

edit: I couldn't find the BOM, either.

what makes you think it is a d44?. what was the moniker[sp] of the truck 100-300?

what lenght was the truck, what was the rear axle/lug count?

If it is a Dana 44 there is nothing special about the Dodge versions. If it's a late 70's version it would have had the full time outers. You could just swap chevy stuff over from the knuckles out if you get it. Not a terrific find unfortunately.

it wasn't under a truck, it was in an axle heap.
it was also definitely a D44, it has the smaller D44 c's that look nothing like D60 c's.
i wasn't considering the purchase, I already found a Dodge D60 in the same yard for $150.
i have heard of these D44's before, I was just curious why Dodge used them and when. It may help someone avoid confusing a D44 and a D60.

i am humble in my doubt and beg your forgiveness.

you got me thinking and reading, petersons4x4 has been building a cheap truck d-200 for 4-6 months now and i never caught the axle till you brought it up. it is a 75 extra cab. with the full time hubs

Pretty much all Dodge Dana 44's from '74,'75-'93 were like that. Nothing special.

I am in the process of building a '78 Dodge Trailmaster Powerwagon. It has the D44 front axle with three U-bolts as you descibed, and I went to replace the front right bearings. I had a helluva time figuring out how to get the friggin rotor off to get to the bearings. I didn't realize it was a hub assembly and had to find a 3/8's 12 point socket to remove the damn bolts holding it all together that were hidden through a hole in the rotor. Then the outer bearing was fused into the rotor, I was lucky because the outer bearing was still in pretty good shape so I just had to replace the inner bearing and both races until I can figure out an alternative solution. truck is back on the road but not happy about the all day "simple" bearing job.

I am not sure where to go from here though. I have a problem in that same hub assembly/knuckle causing some "toe" camber problems, possible some issues with the king pin, so I am trying to decide if I should just go find a 14 bolt or D70 front axle to replace the whole mess. I am pretty new to the 4x4 shit so I am at a loss. Any advice would be much appreciated!

One thing that has me pissin and moaning is I just bought new rims for the 5-4.5 lug pattern, and figure I should have waited now since it will probably be a different lug pattern with just about any axle change I make.

Anyway having fun getting my rig up and running... see ya'll in the mud!
