I stopped by the yard where the Scout was on my way out to CALROCS on Friday. It's a Semi-clean and almost dent free 800 with a v-8 and a 4 speed. Stock as stock gets. I didn't look to see what motor but I'm assuming that it's a 304..I don't think it runs anyway. I plan to use this Scout for my lighter duty wheeling trips and maybe some street time. So, my questions that I have are these:

Should I build the 304 into a badass motor or just swap in a 345? I plan on keeping IH powertrain in this one;) Will all the accessories switch between a 304 and 345?

How can I tell which 4 spd I got? I'm so IH stupid, it's not funny. I guess, I'll have to head over to the BB to actually learn something about these things...:(

Other than that...I plan on putting in another Waggy front axle and probably a narrowed 35 spline 9" rear. SOA and 33's or 35's.

You lucky bastard, wish I had the time for a second rig.

The accessories will, but I don't know about the brackets, one of the other's will be able to, if it's going to be a light wheeler and DD, etc. Why mess with an engine swap. BTW the 345 is wider then the 304.

Pop the cover and take a pic, I'll be able to tell you. The tranny is most likely a T18 with 4:1 first. There are some 800's with the wide version.

I'll have a set of Scout II axles for sale soon, you interested?

Could be a 266. Michelle's 68 800 originally came equipped with a 266. I have the rods and oil pan and one head left from it. :D

When my buddy traded for it it came with a few parts in the back and nekkid motor mounts.

Swapped in the '75 304/closeT19/D20 out of his rusty SII.

The acces. and brackets are the same between the 266/304/345/392.. but the belts are different. You might also run into a problem with the alt on the passenger side inner fender with a 345.. seems to me it's a close fit on the 304.

If you have mechanical linkage, the clutch linkage will need work - there's an arm that mounts to the cylinder head, which will be higher/wider on the 345.

4spd is a T18. R is right and forward. 4:1 non-sync 1st gear.

Like Joe said.. if it's a 304 and it runs, keep it. Great for a DD.

Michelle's 800 has the 304, close T19, 4.27 gears, and at the moment 31x10.50 Mickeys. It can be hard to control some times. :D Not much for top speed, but for around town it's great.

Remember - 304s don't mind spinning up as much as a 345 does. :D

OK..yes I suppose that it could be a 266...would this be a bad thing? I have seen 800's with 345's in them and the inner fender has to be sawzalled to get the Alt to fit...I already expected this. As for the tranny...I am actually hoping that it's the narrow pattern one. I'd like to have an actual 4 speed for this thing.

Joe

Here's how I let the GF know:
"Hey, I have good news and bad news"

Her" WHAT?"

me" The good news is that Tony found me a top for the Scout"

Her" so what's the bad news...How much?"

Me" $200 (her reaction wasn't bad at this point) but the rest of the Scout has to come with it"

Then she got pissed (Which is very rare for her) and started complaining about me working on the other Scout so much and money for the wedding...yadda, yadda, yadda...

Anyway, basically, I'm grounded from buying any parts for this thing until after the wedding (Sept). If you still have the axles then, let me know. (In the meantime, I'll sneak a few small things in while I can:D )h

Only that you can't get new valves n' such for the heads.. or new pistons.. but hey, as long as it runs..

When it quits, stuff a 304 in.

Damian hasn't shown a lineset for one of the wide-ratio T18 800s he's robbed parts out of yet.. so it still seems like they don't exist. :D

The close ratio is VERY streetable. The T18 won't be quite as nice as my T19s, but still..

I did get tired of shifting all the time, so I would just got good at sliding from 1st to 2nd w/o the clutch.. pretty easy.

Also, all in all, a pretty *quick* setup.

Oh man, it's started already! :flipoff2:

Doesn't she want a Scout 800 of her own? And wouldn't it be nice to have the new 800 all ready to go so you can drive away from the church in STYLE? :D

How soon until the wedding, again? How about telling her you will be honeymooning at Hammers in your new scout? Think she would like that?? :)

Jenni wouldn't go for a honeymoon at tha Hammers... well, actually she might, but with my brother's wedding as well, al our vacation and budget it taken up for a LONG honeymoon :(

Was trying for RMIHR for the honeymoon, but the time thing killed it... maybe for an early aniversery.... :D

And Scout Dude... ONLY 2-scouts..... whats with that?? Light-weight... Jenni counted the other day... I'm "down" to 8 IH's in the yard.... good news (well maybe) 2 are going to the scraper, and a guy just got ahold of me to take one of the 800's away...

so, lets see:

'72 T-lette. To be HD tow rig
'68 800, was rolled, but runs like a champ, not sure what the future holds for it...

'80 Diesel Traveler. My brothers, but in my yard , motor has a couple cracked pistons, but runs... were thinking of going cheap and easy in swap'n in a 345/727/D20 combo I have kicking around.. I like the Diesel, but it won't tow worth a crap.. soo.

Course, also:

'69 800, v-8 chassis, HOPEFULLY just sold...
'74? Scout II, or whats left of it... scrap fodder, just got to finish loading it up.
'69 D-serise PU. Keeping the frame for a future project (can we say street machine). Cab is shot.
