I think I got the preload on my pinion bearings a little too tight at the last seal change since they started to whine the other day. I plan to replace the crush sleeve and hopefully re-use the bearings unless I am told otherwise. When I replaced the yoke the last time I tried to remove the support, but could only get it out about 1/4" before it wouldn't move any further. Not wanting to screw things up I just set the pinion bearing preload to about 35 in-lbs to account for the preload on the carrier bearings, which may have been a little too tight. I have searched and can't find anything saying you can or can't remove the pinion support without removing the carrier. I am prepared to check the backlash and pattern, but would like to avoid having to reset the carrier preload and going through the whole gear setup process if I don't have to. Can I remove the pinion gear and pinion support without having to remove the carrier/ring gear from the 3rd member? If so, do I just need to pull on it a little harder?

ok for starters according to the book 35lb is way to tight. the book says 10-15 in-lb....also...the reason that pinion support is tough to get out is because there is a oil seal around it...its what is hanging up..when i take my pinion support out i just use a flathead and pry it and it pops right out.

Thanks, I just didn't want to tear anything up more than I have to. I set the pinion preload to 35in-lb since I was turning the carrier at the same time, but like you said that was too tight. This time I plan to remove the pinion so I can get a more accurate preload measurement.

I've found that some gears ratios allow you to remove it and some don't. If it doesn't come out you will at least need to back off the adjusters once removing the third member.
