Hey.
If i had ask you this :" you have 1000$ and a 88 TBI 350 engine that needs to be rebuild , what would be the 3 major things to put inside ?" what would it be ?
Thanks for advance , and please remember that it goes to a rock buggy vehicle .
I would fork over the extra $400 or so and just buy a NEW engine from GM :)

Save your money the higest dollar parts don't help if you hydrolock it or run it when it is starved for oil. take it apart plastigage all the bearings replace if nescessary look at the cylinders hone and rering if nescessary. You could dump a ton of money into it but the way a rock buggy gets used there is no reason to, just go through everything to make sure it isn't going to break down on the trail. If you are lucky the only thing you will need is a gasket set an oil pump and a timing chain. If you are unlucky then add rings and bearings. If you need machine work go pick up another short block, and sell yours as a rebuildable core. If you get lucky you are in it $200 and if you are not you are in it $350 put the rest of the money in a cookie jar and use it to fix whatever you break the first time out. Or you could write me a check.
