burn a hole through. I need to weld on new shock mounts on a toyota housing. I use a big buzz box BTW, I plan on using 3/32 6011 on a 90 amp setting. My only concern is I don't want to burn through the housing. Does anyone know how thick the housing is:question:
Thanks

I also know to do small stitch welds and let cool a little between welds to cut down on the heat and warpage factor.

Toy housings are 3/16" stamped steel...

not trying to put down your welding skills but if you're asking this kindof question you might not should be welding on it ...

:) The thickness of a particular piece of steel has nothing to do with his welding skills! I think he was better off asking a question when he was unsure about the answer than taking a guess and burning a hole in his housing. :)

100% agree

We all start somewhere, we dont know it all, we learn it from eachother, thats why we have this Board duh :flipoff2:

very true.

fwiw greg, i found on my toy housing that a 7014 produced a much better weld, heck i ended up using them on almost everything as a result.

thanks for the feedback guys. I've done plenty of welding on the rig from bumpers to sliders, bed bob, ford shock towers.....I just haven't welded on the axle tube and did not want to have my settings to high for the given thickness.
hey morpheus thanks for the tip on the 7014. I'll check it out. Once again thanks for the info...have a couple of   on me.

hey bud.. in my opinion 90 amps w/ a 3/32" 6011 might be a little hot for 3/16" steel like the toy housing.. 90 amps welds 1/4" good w/ a 1/8" 6011.. with a 3/32" i'd be much more inclined to weld on about 60 or 70 amps.. grab some scrap 3/16" and test it out.. going hotter is always the way to go and get penetration when in doubt.. but here i'd rather a shock mount pop off than mess up the integrity of the housing somehow.. but i don't think you'll be popping off shock mounts either.. just test it out..

yea really, how thick are the mounts? No need to burn hotter than that

I don't think you will warp it with a centralized weld like a mount, gopher it :D

yea my mounts are 3/16'ths as well. some left over 2x2 square that I cut to shape. I'll try out some different heat settings before I do final welds. Thanks for the advice:D

I am going to be welding perches/ shock mounts to a yota axle in 2 weeks. should be fun to do.

I am prob gonna make the perches out of 3/16 or 1/4 whatever i can bum from the shop.
