I posted this in the dodge forum first but got impatient for feedback...so feel free to move or delete as necessary...sorry

Am i reading this right?...you are expected to loose oil?...i rarely used any oil from say 125k to 175k (bought truck used) but recently im using almost a gallon between 7500 mile oil changes (im now at 212k)...i have fixed leaks and performed a monometer test which was well within spec...was i worried for nothing or am i missing something in this TSB

Any blue smoke from the exhaust under a load?

i haze a little at idle but i think that is from the injectors...under load only BLACK smoke...im actually starting to think that my oil consumption isnt that bad...several other forums seem to corroborate the TSB...I appreciate all of the help troubleshooting...but im not exactly concerned where the oil is going because i have addressed all visible leaks and everything that is servicable (turbo, intercooler etc...)

i was hoping to gleen a little insight to the TSB listed. The way i read it my oil consumption is actually allowed for and within spec. How does it read to you..and has anyone else heard of "acceptable oil consumption"

If im reading the TSB wrong..then im using too much oil and the ole 6bt is ready for a rebuild...otherwise aside from loosing my membership to greenpeace, Im content using a little oil.

Blue smoke at any time is oil burning. Could be valve guides or rings. White smoke could be real lean or water vapor. Black smoke is rich (to much fuel).

My 98.5 is approaching 90K miles. No oil consumption whatsoever.

I didn't take the time to read the TSB, but my truck uses about 2qts in 5000 mi. I'm not worried about it, it doesn't leak so it's burning it I suppose. Don't really care, not enough to worry about in my book.

The other thing to watch for, is if you're not using any oil, is you might be "making " oil IE a leaking injector and fuel washing the oil film off the cylinder walls.

Thanks...as long as one person agrees with me, i feel better...i know diesels have gained alot of technilogical ground in the last few decades, but i still feel like expecting the piston rings and valve seals to deal with Boost, high diesel compression, and bieng over fueled...is a little lofty...and I think Cummins agrees, thus, the TSB in question.

Thanks guys, im gona go ahead and mark this off my Shat that keeps me awake list...

There is no such thing as a "lean" mixture of Diesel.

White smoke can be water vapor, or completely unburned Diesel fuel is also white.

Black smoke is PARTIALLY burned fuel, typically from being overfueled.

Our '96 CTD will use about 2 quarts between 7500-10000 mi oil changes. Oil always seems fine. It has 150,000 mi on it.
