: Isuzurover hook me up
pendy 09-01-2005, 05:32 PM Isuzurover will you send me some portal hubs? Are you in Aussieland or Duetschland at present? I wonder what you guys pay over there for the maxidrive portal hubs? Would they ship postal service?
Anyway we talked about something like this before and i have an itch to beat on a set of these beasts. What do you think?
Are you upgrading your truck? Surely your not tired of the stock CV's?
uninformed 09-02-2005, 12:24 AM why don't you come out for a holiday and just take them home in your luggage and if you talk "shop" to Mal its a business trip, thus a tax deduction.
the us dollar gets about $1.33 aussie so this will help. Maxi-drive are selling a few of these and some or going out rear steer as well. :smokin:
cheers, Serg
Michele 09-02-2005, 08:08 AM He was in Karlsruhe (Germany) until last week
(he doesn't reply my email though).
Just to chat, out of curiosity, the MD portal hubs seem not to be so "unbreakable" compared to Volvos i.e. and come at "interesting" price...
pendy 09-02-2005, 08:59 AM I'd love to come over for holiday, if I could ever take one. Of course there would be the problem with the women chasing after me since I'm American and so good looking. Guess the missus will have to stay at home. Any one want to post pictures of the portals here since my red star was revoked?
JP
Stock cv's, now thats funny Larry. Finally
Bush65 09-02-2005, 04:21 PM Jim,
Lets see if I can link to some pics that were posted on outerlimits.

what makes them "not as strong as a volvo"???
who's broken them???
Serg
Those are certainly sexy!! I want some!!
edit: After reading my post I thought Pendy might get excited. I'm actually talking about the portals.

I don't know of any specific breakage, but take a look at the pics and you will see an additional bearing and some bracing on the front setup. It adds a ton of strength to the king pin assembly, and is a fairly recent design change. Any history of breakage prior to this is just that, history.
uninformed 09-03-2005, 03:40 AM theres also a brace for the rear that goes up to the bottom shock mount, this in turn gets a infill to brace it aswell, as for the gear train the first set that went to europe only had 1 idler gear and these have been run at 120kph, done a fair few road miles and plenty of offroad duties, still going strong
Serg

I didn't know of a design change,sorry.
Yet to see the pics.
I didn't mean they have to break,I'm just curious in how you could rate them.
A mate here fitted Volvos to his 90,there was a kit of MD portals lying on the floor in a shop at the time but Volvos were a straight (erm, more or less) swap, while MD meant fitting portals to an existing LR axle at exilarating price (here)and too increased width...so the Volvos came cheaper and seem stronger anyway.
Just practical thoughts...
Pendy, there's the 25th anniversay of the Deutsche Land Rover club (Oct. the 1st/2nd/3rd)near Berlin if you want to come,I should give Isuzurover a lift
:)
uninformed 09-03-2005, 04:25 PM ok, seemed stronger how?
i wound'nt have thourght it gets much easier than bolting up to the end of and axle
yes they will make the stock track 85mm wider each side but with 123mm of lift i think you want a little wider track.
Whats thhe gear train like on the volvo's?
serg
Bush65 09-03-2005, 05:20 PM ...Whats thhe gear train like on the volvo's?

The diff crown wheel and pinion are similar to rover. Ratios are 2.91:1 (11 t pinion, 32 t cw, spiral bevel) or 3.44:1 (from 6x6). Hemisphere is 2 pin.
Lockers are standard, with vacuum actuator.
Axles between diff and portal are similar to rover 29.5mm (1.16") od and 26.9mm (1.06") minor dia.
CV for front is similar to rover.
Portal gear reduction is 2.06:1 spur gears. The pinion has 16 teeth and has 38mm (1.5") face width. The wheel has 33 teeth and has 36mm (1.4") face width.
The volvo portal box does not use idler gears to change rotation like maxi-drive. So the volvo uses larger gears (stronger if face width and material are comparable). But maxi-drive uses 2 idlers, so load is always shared by twice as many teeth (stronger). So difficult to say from this info if volvo or maxi-drive is stronger.
I've heard of volvos breaking teeth in the portal box.
Final drive shaft from volvo portal is 44.3mm (1.74") od, 39.5mm (1.56") minor dia. But is not full floater like maxi-drive.
Have never heard of volvo breaking these axles.
I would hazard a guess that maxi-drive portals are close to the volvos for strength. They have the advantages of easier to fit and have disc brakes.
uninformed 09-03-2005, 11:55 PM i would bet that maxi-drive poratals are made from better materials
pendy 09-04-2005, 02:49 AM Would love the chance to thrash some.
A visit to the fatherland. Could be fun. Actually MAR is calling me this year at that same time. But thanks Michelle. Get the Aussie in trouble and share some pics with us.
JP
evilfij 09-04-2005, 07:45 AM If you are going to MAR make sure to say hi to us east coast folks.
And as far as the portals I would run the volvos. They are serious beef.
2.06 x 3.54 is too steep. 5.99 in the volvos is actually within the range of reason.
afirover 09-04-2005, 04:56 PM hey pendy when you get to MAR look for the semi and come talk to the doc he is portal "fundi" and has made many a portal/mog bugie in fact see the pics someware on this board before red rear ster mog rig :grinpimp:
Michele 09-05-2005, 01:57 AM As to the narrower axle width is preferred here as it fits better the local trails (not really Hummer-sized,uhm!).
There's a MD portals equipped 90 which belongs to Patrick somewhat,MD importer for France/Europe,Outback Import.
Those should be the "old" type hubs...?

Ach!
Shame,I'll try my best to take pics of local beauties and Rovers of course for you to see,ok?
:grinpimp:
I've seen some pics of the recent NR in Colorado, something I can only dream of.
:(
Cheers
ISUZUROVER 09-05-2005, 02:50 AM Wow, I go away for a week and everyone tries to contact me - sorry guys. Was too busy (doing work) in Belgium to check my email/web.
Pendy - you will have to get a few more rich customers. Last I checked the portals were $12000AUD (US$9000ish) for all 4. And that was for a non-steering rear.
I am still in Germany, but if you are serious I can still help you with shipping etc...

Evil,
Volvo portal reduction ratio is 2.06:1, maxi-drive is 1.30:1. So overall maxi reduction is 1.30 x 3.54 = 4.6 (not too bad).
creepyjeepy 09-05-2005, 02:38 PM hello all. i drive a jeep and also have an fj-45 (looking for a series I rover). anywho, what would it take to get those portals' prices to come down? i think they'd be awesome for a jeep as well, even if it means using rover axles. or, would it be possible to fabricate some sort of adapter for jeep axles?

If you cut the axle tubes and welded flanges (same as rovers) to them, that would allow the portal boxes to bolt on. Then you would need a set of custom axles.
pendy 09-10-2005, 09:42 AM John do you think some American charm would help me fetch a better price from the charming Paula, of Maxidrive, who is in contact with me about the portal axles? I do not hold much hope for a price reduction, but am happy to have a women email me from Maxidrive, in the color pink.
At least I assume she is a women.
Can anyone loan me some American charm?

Paula is Mal's wife, I believe. Don't try to hard with the charm if you're fishing for a discount from Mal. :flipoff2:
Bush65 09-10-2005, 04:56 PM Correct wilsby, Paula is Mals wife.
Jim, sorry can't help you with charm - if I had any you would be welcome to some!
By the time I get around to the disc brake conversion on my volvos, they will probably end up costing as much as getting maxi portals and have taken longer.
ISUZUROVER 09-12-2005, 01:01 AM I was once told by a mate of mine that the best bet for a discount from MD was to deal with Mal and pay cash. That advice has served me well. Unfortunately for you Jim, I don't think either will be possible.
Unfortunately I don't have any charm to loan you either. Let us know if you get a discount from Paula - you may be the first...

1: Maybe Merv can set you up with some "Lucky Charms". :D
2: If the statements that Tony Cordell has made relative to Mal are true, he has charm to spare.
3: Shopgrrl says between Pendy and the Mrs, they have plenty of charm (PT agrees, at least with regard to Mrs. Pendy :flipoff2:)
Peace,
PT
