: ISUZU guys check in here
road1will 03-11-2002, 06:37 PM troopers, amigos, rodeos, whatever ya got introduce yourself here and post a pic of yer rig (if ya got one). im thinking about (and probably will) buying a gen 2 trooper and want to see who else is round here with a zoozoo.
willysfreak 03-11-2002, 06:51 PM My family owns 3, yes 3 Troopers, two '88's and a 94. The 94 seems to be OK but the two four banger 88's are terrible. They're engines are terrible. I have replaced the engines in both of them, and have had to deal with a cracked/warped head about 10 times between the two of them. Evidently the older (like 86's) ones are better for soe reason, as a neighbor of mine has had one since new and never had a problem, but I have to say if your going to build one of these for whatever reason, go w/ the V6 or a different vehical entirely. Just my experiance. I hate those damn cars:mad3: best of luck to you.
road1will 03-11-2002, 06:57 PM hey newbie :flipoff2:
yeah the generation 2 (92 on) troopers are much better (or so i have read). the one im thinkin of has the 3.2l EFI V6.
sorry to hear about your bad isuzu troubles.
I had an 88 that ran and drove super....but the 4cyl was a piece of crap overall...I had to do the head 2x in 18 mos....it climbed well and whatnot, clearance was the pits though.. but I would look for a 6 cyl...even though the early ones had problems with oil seals due to that junky GM motor in it...:D
willysfreak 03-13-2002, 06:23 PM "2x in 18 months" Yeah, thats what I'm talkin about, glad to hear that I'm not the only one. As far as the gen II's go, I guess they're better, but they are still quite top heavy, are you talkin' about BUILDING the thing, or just using it as a daily driver and wheelin' on dirt roads, unpaved drivway's, etc:question:
willysfreak 03-13-2002, 06:25 PM 9-Volt, also, I just read that you have what sounds like a bitchin' series rover, got any pics around?!?!?
Belly Dragger 03-13-2002, 06:31 PM 91 Amigo
97 Rodeo
98 Amigo
Love the things. Damned reliable, if you take care of them. The 4 cyl does have a head problem but that usually happens when you allow them to overheat. I have the 3.2 in the 98 and it makes about 230 hp. The 3.1 a little less. The 4 banger a lot less. The 4 banger is my daily driver.
The 3.2L and 3.5L engines can be made to directly bolt up to Toyota trannies for dual cases if you go that far.
I'd definately get the 3.1/3.2 or 3.5L versions. Or buy one with a blown motor and drop in a RamJet 350. :D

road1will 03-13-2002, 06:40 PM only a few reeeeeally bad pics of my rig. one at the end of this post when the PO was wheelin it. now ive got it in the driveway less axles, suspension, and tires. but by summer it will be on the trail as read in my sig.
as to the Trooper? well i would build it to be a weekend wheeler/daily commuter with 33s MAYBE 35s, MAYBE a SAS. gotta still be reliable but fun too! this past weekend i wheeled with an Xterra (modified) that was f-ing cool. he drives it every day to work and the thing still spanked ass on the trail. thats what converted me to the foreign wheeler/driver concept. the other thing that impressed me was that the thing felt so SOLID off road- no squeaks, no rattles, and it felt like you were driving a well-constructed machine. the seats were comfortable, the stereo was good, and it wasnt drafty.
whats the biggest tire size anyone has run on a GenII trooper? who makes a good lift? anyone aside from Calmini?
road1will 03-13-2002, 06:44 PM whoops forgot pic.
Belly Dragger 03-13-2002, 06:49 PM I think Darlignton Off Road and Independant 4x4 offer lifts as well. With a mere 3" on the suspension and a 3" body there is a gen II in LA area running 35's without rubbing. Should be bad ass. I'm waiting to see pic's myself otherwise I'd post them here.
Check out http://www.4x4wire.com/isuzu that's where you'll find a large Isuzu crowd. Although most check out the Pirate pages there isn't an Isuzu section so most posts are made on the wire.
Also Moab 'Zu Zoo V is coming up. May 16th-19th. The Trooper I mentioned will be there along with 80 or so other Isuzu's. Even some fairly awesome Vehicross's. Check out http://www.zuzoo.org for more informaiton. Moab 'Zu Zoo is the 3rd largest permited event in Moab according to the BLM in recreational use days. It's awesome, it's Moab and it's not EJS. Good people a lot of fun and trails and we even allow honorary Isuzu's.
rpenner54 03-13-2002, 08:21 PM Hey Belly Dragger, any specific's on the Yota tranny's? I have a 92 Rodeo as a daily driver and it's a stick. If I can swap a auto from a yota and another Suzu that would really open up a bunch of possibilities! The stick is fine, but I drive over 80 miles everyday and it would be nice to have an auto.
Thanks!
McSoo 03-13-2002, 11:12 PM Only problem with Xtras is the huge ass boat anchor of a front spring mount. And the lack of aftermarket support. And the SUA. And the 2.02:1 tcase.... I had a friend with a boxy style Trooper. Thing was pretty sweet. He had 32's on it with a small lift. I think he locked the rear. It was a pretty cool rig.
Archie_G 03-14-2002, 04:38 AM Hey 9volt, look up Mark (Jeepin) on the www.newo.org board. He has a Trooper that he uses as a DD/Tow Rig/Light Wheeler. He love the thing. I does wheel very well, he has a slight lift and BFG AT's.
He will give you the straight scoop!
