On which Disco,the 94 or the 04?

Typical of the earlier ones is the failure of the interupt solenoid in the top of the transfer case.

You can remove it and toss it or replace it - your choice - without disassembling much. Its easier with the brake drum removed, but not necessary.

Mine's gone, but you have to be the "computer" to remember to only try to shift the 'case in nuetral or park.

I could be a mistaken, because it is different here (Aus) to USA, but as I understand, the North American and Japanese versions of the LT230's have an interlock solenoid to prevent shifting between low and high, if the tranmission is not in neutral (or should that be park?). Also I think the driver's foot has to be pushing on the brake pedal.

Sure sounds like the solenoid then. Mine quit working last Fall and I simply removed it .... it works like a Defender now :)

How did you remove it?

Forward of the parking brake drum, on the top of the case is the solenoid cover. It is attached with four small bolts (I'm thinking that they're 10mm) and the two wires that control the solenoid go under this cover.

Remove the four bolts and the cover will come off. It may be glued down with silicone or Hylomar, but you should be able to twist it and it should come straight up.

Under the cover is the solenoid and a centering / springy washer doodad - that is the official name :) - that will come out too.

You should be able to remove the solenoid from its home and unplug it from the connector.

Replacement is the reverse. Yes, you can eliminate the solenoid and just replace the cover at this point, but you should understand that you will NOT have any park/neutral lockout protection without the solenoid.

You can do this without removing the driveshaft and parking brake if you have more flexible arms than I do, but it was waaaaay easier for me to just drop the driveshaft and the parking brake. Oh, be sure to chock the tires before you start. Properly support the vehicle, use eye protection, etc.

There are professional techs on this board; remember, I'm just the simple unfrozen cavemen accountant.

On a '94, there are very few reasons why the CEL would illuminate. Should be very easy to fix. Find the diagnostic readout, read the code and fix the truck!

I pulled the auto shifter assembly and the cover for the range selector off from in the cab and it was right there I pulled it out and left it out! It works great now it makes an annoying buzz for about 30 seconds when I put it in low range....?? oh well it works!!
Thanks guys
