I've got a pair of 44's from a '78 waggy with 3.07:1 gears. I want to change the gears (obviously), but can't seem to find the right carrier. I eventually want to put lockers in both ends, but won't have the funds for a while. I know that I can get the "thick" gears that will work with my existing carrier, but will these thick gears work with a regular 44 locker later? Do they make lockers especially for the thick gears?

The Aussie Locker will work.

The carrier "break" on a D44 is 3.90 and down I THINK. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. I'm sure that you could get a locker for the higher series (lower numerically) gears that would therefore, work with thick gears too, but why not try and find a pair of the lower series carriers to start with? Stock open D44 carriers couldn't be that expensive or hard to find I wouldn't think. I guess it really doesn't matter though, as long as you can run whatever you want to with the thick gears.

Any drop in locker will work for you no matter which carrier you have as long as it's open. If you want to go that route, it really doesn't matter what you use and you'll save some decent $$ too since they're cheaper to buy and they require no gear set-up. They may not be as strong as a full carrier replacement locker, but with D44 shafts and joints, I kinda doubt your locker will be the weak link. I've heard good stuff about the Aussie Locker and they are pretty reasonably priced, but I've had no personal experience with them.
