If tire clearance, gear ratio and axle strength were not issues, what would be the largest usable tire diameter. Please give the reason(s) for your opinion.

98inch your canutenator valve will have to be modified though

i don't understand the question, if it was a perfect world like you suggest then the only reason not to put the biggest tires made on there would be that it would make things too easy.

Depends on the wheelbase;)

What does this do? If you made one axle wide enough to clear the other then the tires could overlap.:D

About 115" and the world is not perfect but the rig I'm building has open fenders, unimog axles and a 300:1 crawl ratio and three intake and two exhaust canutenator valves.

Actually, if you had a 100" wb, then 48" tires wouldn't touch, and if you cut, rather than lifted for the tire, if you rolled, you just keep goin in reverse(upside down)!

Go with what you can afford 4 or 5 of. Big tires cost big $$$ so start looking at cost and that might make your choice for you. I like my 39.5X15X15 TSl's for size, flex, and cost.

also depends on your blinker fluid

offroadr35

it also depends how heavy your rig is. "daniel" on the board sells some really big tires, you may want to talk to him.

well then it's a stupid question and you need to give more specifics. We're not mind readers.

27" tires. I just put a set of these on my Explorer and now I can go anywhere. Small tires are where it's at.

Well, i would say big enough so that you could roll the thig, throw it in reverse, and keep driving. Until of course your motor dies...

but if you want a serious answer the Michelin XML is the biggest decent rockcrawling tire i've seen. They are supposedly less stiff than the XL, and have more sidewall flex. So just get the biggest size of those. BTW mog 404, or 406?? 'cause 404's won't put up with those meats. I can get XML's in any size for $150 from a local place in WACO, TX. That means you should be able to find them ANYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!

Good Luck!

There is no such thing as the biggest useable tire. Even those will go flat....I suggest using 20" steel wheels with angle iron welded diagonally across for a tread. The onle drawback might be sidewall flex.....YA THINK?????

Goodyear makes one 140.5" in diameter. It fits a 32" wide by 57"diameter rim with 6" flange. It has a 2" ply, is 45.7" wide, and has a tread depth of 108/32 (5.625"). Contact patch is 1460 square inches. Look here: http://www.goodyearotr.com/catalog/RL-4B_HSize.html

Is that big enough?

On second thought I think the largest useable tire is actually 155R/10 anything bigger is just for show. :rasta:

Hi my name is Bob. Instead of doing what all the other newbies do, I will be very specific and informative. I searched for over two hours, reading all kind of threads on wheelbase, tire size, and the best tire for use in various different terains and on different types of rock. Instead of asking a vague, pie-in-the-sky fantasy tire usage post, I'm going to say this:

I have a 1995 [brand] vehicle with 4" of lift and a rear locker. I have 4.56:1 axle gears, so I shouldn't have problems spinning my tires. My terrain consists primaily of steep, off-camber hill-climbs which are composed of either rock or loose dirt. We see mud enough to make that a concern, but I really need a good rock tire. This vehicle sees ocassional street use, so that is of some concern, but I am willing to give up quite a bit of street friendliness in return for offroad performance. I hate sawzalls and don't want to lose my shiny chrome fender trim or my 8" wide chrome wheels. Taking that into account, what tire would you recommend.Does that explain why we're sick of all these people coming in, asking a vague question, and then getting their newbie feelings hurt because we think very little of anyone who *doesn't* look forward to the day a sawzall meets their fenders .

I like my 39.5 but for you my wifes tires on her car would be great!!! Try these 205/40/17 they will look real good on your machine when you are puddle jumping and posing at the mall!!

Hardcore douche bag. Nobody made you read or reply to my question. I think you need to take a laxative. One simple question and million retarded replies. There is definately a piont in which a tire becomes too big. Most of the trucks in Top Truck the past few years are running 44" Boggers. Does anyone running 44s think they are not big enough? If so how big would be big enough. If anyone is deeply offended by my question, I won't get my feelings hurt if you don't reply.

I think you are the one that needs to relax...Your just like High Heat over on the jeep board...comes on thinkin hes the shit and is shut down...we dont care if you have 300:1 or mog axles or can spend a bazillion dollars on tires...tire size is personal preference...if you cant drive with 31s do you think you will be able to drive with 44s or bigger???:D:flipoff2::D

the info you are going to get has already been said in this thread...XMLs seem to flex better than XLs and blah blah blah...my question to you is do you really need 300:1 in the mall parking lot???:flipoff2:

One simple question and million retarded replies.

Actually it was one retarded question and a million replies trying to point out your ignorance. You cant just make up fantasy scenerios and expect an intelligent response. "If I had no limitations on my engine compartment and everything in my rig was indestructable, and if gas was free, what engine would you run?" Stop speaking if you dont have anything worth while to say. :flipoff2: Fawkin newbies.

Serously though, anything bigger than a 155/80R13 wide white is pretty much useless. And of course this is assuming the proper 13 x 7 gowd wires.
