View Full Version : Poll:Rear Axle Options
Looking for the 'right' rear axle to go into the YJ. Have the '79 Ford D60 to go up front.
14 bolts are the easy route, but are the the best combination of strength, clearance, gearing and brake availability. Will be running 4.88's or 5.13's. Definitely want good sized discs out back.
Will be linked rear end, YJ w/a 302 turning 40's.

I guess I am first to vote.I went 14 bolt.Just because these are a dime a dozen.Detroits are cheap for them and now so is a Mini spool. You can do disk brakes on it very easy and cheap. All you need is the brackets and then stock D44 chevy rotors and calipers.5:13 are as low as you can go on these though. Also you can shave the lip and gain 1" easily.
Next choice would be the D70 or D60 swapped in 35 spline axles.

14 bolt limits your choice of gears if you up size in tires later on, id do a 70 so you can go lower later if needed.

14 bolt because they're cheap, parts are cheap, easy to find, and they're comparable in strength to a 60 or 70.

I say FF D60 with 35 spline axles, just stick with the drums in the rear also, they have more inital holding power than a disc does.

Just because nobody has gone against the grain yet....none of the above! :)
Just toss in an AAM 10.5" or 11.5", weld it & be done with it! They're already set-up SOA if your frame width matches & even if it doesn't, it doesn't take a miracle to change things for the perches & shocks, plus they have nice discs.

Does anyone have weight comparisons for the axles. I haven't been able to turn up too much searching.
What I have found: D70 ~300# without drums
Also: Is cheap the reasone for so many votes on the 14B? The 14B shafts are reportedly weaker than 35 spline D70. If those are put into a 60 housing, get the strength and a (little) less weight + better ground clearance. Does the R&P become the fuse in a setup like this.
u-joint: have any good sources for an AAM 10.5 info and pricing. Isn't the 10.5 a decendent of the 14B?

14b
with a front RC 60, you dont have the super low gear options anyway
less hub stickout, to hang or bash on rocks
readily available replacment shafts if necessary
plenty strong
shorter pinion for longer d-shaft

I went with a D61 because it was what was available at the time. If I had it
to do over again I'd get a 14 bolt and shave it.

I went with a 35 spline 60 in the rear over 14b because ARB locker wasn't yet available, and have 5.38 in my RC 60 front. If I had to re-do it now, I would probably pick a 70 or shaved 14b.

I am not sure about this. But I don't think there is any lockers available for this, yet. Is there?
Can anyone help me find axle weights. Big & Heavy are about all I can find - no definite weights for any of these.

An Eaton.Shaved they have the clearance of a d44 and they are as strong as a 14 bolt.

I voted D60 but I'd recommend shaving it so you have the clearance of a d44 and stronger shafts than a 14b if you go chromoly.
