I'm looking for a winch. I know Warn is a good brand and have decided that route. I have a full size Dodge, with all gear will be over 6500 lbs.
I have dual battery and high amp alter. Which winch from there line would be good to go with. Not a just gets buy winch or completely overkiller (not that the later would be great). Something to do the job and keep doing the job many years down the road.

I think it's common to run with a winch rated for twice the weight of your rig.
So on the Gnewt, at about 2700 pounds, my Warn M6000 works just fine.

All of the Warn lineup is great but the trick is to balance what sort of use that winch will see, with the amount of time you think you might need it, balanced with your budget. Nobody wants to spend too much money on something if they can get by with less, but a winch is such an important item that spending and getting less may just turn out to be a waste of money if it is not big enough to do the job at hand. No sense on spending $650 dollars on a winch you cannot use, when an $800 one will pull you though most anything you put it against.

Questions that need answered.
What terrain do you run? ANY mud?
Are you planning this for self-recovery, recovery of friends, or pulling the game you shot up the hill to your truck so you can haul it out?
If you are pulling your friends out too, how heavy are their rigs?
If they haven't bought a winch, how much are you going to charge them to pull them out if they are not the ones carrying the beer or the women?...just a thought on how to help pay for the bigger winch :p
How often do you think you will use it (take a guess then double that)?...once you own a winch, all of your friends will be calling for you to run with them or come haul their stuck asses out.
Those few questions are ones needed to answer your question better.

Just get the 9.5TI. It'll do the job unless you're a mud bogger.

The most popular one I sell is the 9.5ti. That's what I'd get.

Well I live in BC Canada, rocky mountianous terrain, no mud boggin but some trails have the marshy goo for an obstical.
My friends rigs are around the same weight or slightly lighter.
I hope I don't have to use it often but could have used it a few times this year so far, so say 6X a year more or less.

Is the steel cable good to keep on or going to a synthetic a better choice.

The 9.5TI does look good. Is it enough? Since I would be making a mount to be removable for front and rear locating is the 9.5TI portable a better bet?
Would an 9.5XP be any different or better? What about the M12000?

As always money is an issue but I like my stuff to be functional, reliable and strong. So that takes dibs over cheaping out.

Go with synthetic line.

Get it from RockStomper (http://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/recovery/ropes.htm)

Unfortunately, you can't get longer on your winch, just WAY BETTER.

On the M6000, I was able to switch from 80 feet of 5/16" steel to 175 feet of 1/4" synthetic!

Winch rating should be 2x the weight of the truck. And the winch pull rating is at the 1st row of line and decreases with more line on the spool. Thats my $.02.
