: Not stock steering shafts?

I think the U-Joints are going out in my steering shaft, binding is very apparent and the box is only 6 months old, no leaks or anything. Thinking this might as well be upgraded as I don't think I can replace just the U-joints.

Any advice on obtaining an upgraded unit? Should I just find a place that builds steering shafts, send them mine and have them build a better one with the same specs? Or just build the damn thing myself with parts I locate?

The u-joint double cardon assembly thing comes as one unit. I am sure it could be rebuilt though.

Flaming River sells all the individual components so you can make your own.
Just need to figure out the fitting at the steering box and at the column.
For my truck I had a 1" spline at the steering column and 1"DD at the steering box. Don't remember spline counts.
I got a 3/4DDx1"DD joint and then a 9/16x3/4""DD joint and a DD slip shaft.
The shaft is plated and has a zerk in it.
The DD is a large D shape. I think the size is the main diameter, but it's been a while.

Borgeson in Torrington CT. has the same stuff. They had everything I needed when I put power steering in my Series. Good quality and very cool guys to deal with. All you need to do is find out what size and spline count you’ve got in either end and they can set you up. Make sure you use a collapsible shaft incase you pile it up!

Here’s a link to Borgeson.

Hey Guys (Pete & Jim),

Do you have any more photos of the "top" end of those steering shafts?

We're - ok, Pendy is - in the process of installing the same p/s, Scout box in the 109 and while Jimmy may have a good idea of how that top bearing mount has been set up, I'm not sure I do.

edit - Hmm, ok, nice pics here... http://www.seriestrek.com/steering.html and http://www.aloharovers.com/howto/diesel/rebuild11.htm too

Thanks,

KAA

That Flamingriver stuff is nice but spendy. You can buy that shaft complete from A.B. for $230.00.

My column mount might not help much. Its no longer a Rover unit :D

Take a look a TeriAnne's web site and see if she has any photos showing how Timm put in her Scout box. Also, did Slade use a Scout box on his crew cab?

I dunno, Mikey doesn't want to talk to me ... or I'm using the wrong e-mail address :)
