: Specs on D50?
SuperRunner 03-12-2002, 10:59 AM I am still a little confused on what a Dana 50 is. Friend just picked on up.
I know the carrier is smaller, but it uses larger ends and joints. And that the shafts taper down to a smaller shaft.
How do the D50 knuckes, joints and outers compare to a 60.
With the Tera50 you can use a 44 carriear, can you do this with the D50?
strong_like_tractor 03-12-2002, 11:18 AM NO you can't use 44 parts in a regular 50
JP
I'm ass-uming you're not talking a D50 TTB? If you knew what it came out of that wouldn't hurt.....? Anyway, stubs are 30 spline, unsure of dia but I've heard D50 lockouts will work on D60s so maybe that answers that question. On the newer live units the inner shafts taper down to 1.31", same as a D44 and this is where it will break. IOW, no stronger than a D44. Ring gear is 9" IIRC. It's probably gonna be metric wheel bolt pattern and hubcentric - good luck! It's enough of an oddballl it's not worth building IMO, and I completely don't understand the advantage of the Tera-ripoff 50 - 1" more ground clearance sure but at what cost?
borton 03-12-2002, 12:09 PM the 50 comes in the new 1 ton fords it uses the same axle joint as the 60, but the splines of a 44, it has unit bearings instead of spindles and hubs, currie takes these unit bearings and turns them down, redrills them for 5 on 5.5 and sticks them in with a 30 spline hub on a 60 or 9", rather slick combo, and the distance from center of ball joints to the mounting surface is less than a 60 like an inch.

Anyone know the weight rating of the Dana 50 live-axle?
An 8 on 6.5" Dana 50 might be just the ticket for converting my 2wd 1T tow rig to 4x4.. a 3500lbs rated Dana 44 just isn't quite up to the job.. but if I get my hands on a '60, the tow-rig will have to stay 2wd unless I find 2. :D

Yeah, but can (and how) that be fixed? :D
I'll take a stab that the TTB D50 used a completely different hub/spindle/rotor setup..

I'll take a stab that the TTB D50 used a completely different hub/spindle/rotor setup.. hub/spindle/bearings are all one unit on the 50, like the tj/yj/xj/zj/late model dodge trucks. you'll have to weld in the 8 holes, then redrill them. why not get new axles for the rear and wheels :p

Probably would be simpler to get a 10.5 Sterling..
But I've grown a little fond of my odd-ball IH Corporate RA-15 rear axle.. 11" ring gear w/ drop out, 4.30 ratio (tallest they ever offered..), 1.5" axle shafts, 4" tubes, huge drums, and more ground clearance then a Dana 60. :D
Wheels wouldn't be a problem though.. even though they're brand new, they're just stock Ford steel wheels.. cheap. :D
