: where to put the fuel cell
ilovemud 09-10-2005, 09:53 AM i want to go to a plastic fuel cell in my 73 cj 5 but i want to keep the back seat. i am extending the wheel base and their will not be enough room when the rear axle flexes. im spring over and am going to build a cage soon. however i dont know where to put the gas tank. i want to go to a plastic one and maby behind the rear seat. or on one of the rear fenders. i dont mind sliding the rear seat up a few inches. but i would like to be able to offroad with 4 people. who makes a good one at a fair price? the search isnt working on my computer i dont know why so dont tell me to search it.
XJ_ranger 09-10-2005, 09:59 AM in the tub behind the rear seat?
under the driver and passenger seats?
wherever you want?
Tippy 09-10-2005, 09:59 AM Most people put them behind the rear seat. Sam's offroad makes a stainless one that fits between the wheel wells and the rear seat.
Not plastic, but it will work. It is a 15 gallon capacity and I got it from Summit Racing. I will still retain the use of hte back seat should I ever decide to put it in again. I am mounting it flush with the bottom of the frame rail's so I won't lose any clearance. I think it is something like 32" wide, 9-10" deep, and about 12" tall to the top of the cell and another 3 or inches for the filler neck. I am going to pick up a 45* fill neck for it and run it right out of where the tailgate would be. I plan on using a piece of aluminum to cover up the opening of the tailgate. Should look pretty clean when it is done.

chris demartini 09-11-2005, 11:17 AM None of the plastic ones fit behind the back seat unless you get a 3 gallon or something. You need the blingin $275 alum cell pictured above.

That is a nice cell. Do you have any pics from the frame side?
socalchef 09-11-2005, 01:12 PM I'm having blue torch build me a cell that will work with the stock pump. i don't know if i got a sweet deal or if it's the regular price, but it's not much more then the summit aluminum tanks. definitely worth it to me to be able to use the stock stuff again. going to fit exactly where i need it too.

I haven't mounted it solidly yet. I am going to weld some 3/8" plates on the bottom of the frame rails and drill and tap 3 holes on a side. Then I am going to run a plate of 3/8" aluminum across the bottom of the rail's to "skid" the cell. I will bolt the cell using spacers to the aluminum and will countersink all the bolts so there are no bolt heads hangin down. This pic is with the cell in the same location as the other one.
ilovemud 09-11-2005, 03:45 PM I want something cheap their is nothing biling about my jeep she is a low buck only offroader. can i still use the stock pump with a plastic one if i got like a 15 galon plastic one and just make the jeep a 3 seater with all bucket seats. also is going to and adjustable fuel pump going to make my jeep any better offroad? its carb 304 1973 cj 5.
As long as you don't have an in tank fuel pump, your fuel pump will work with any fuel cell out there. I don't believe going to an adjustable fuel pump will affect your offroad performance. If anything, I would consider retrofitting a GM TBI setup on it to make it better offroad.

Any chance you have the part number from Summit on the fuel cell?
Meyer 09-11-2005, 07:01 PM Search their site.
I have the same cell. Took the stock rear seat out, put in a bucket and put the cell next to in long ways (front to rear). Bolted it to the floor.

ilovemud 09-12-2005, 09:14 AM how many gallons will i need for all day use with a 304?
bigblacktj 09-12-2005, 09:45 AM Depends on how much your foot is on the gas and how much down time you have waiting on people. I out say 15 gallons would be a good start you can always carrie some extra in a tank.
chris demartini 09-12-2005, 03:11 PM I have a 15 gallon cell and the only time I used more than half was a rainy day in Tellico.
Your going to have a hard time finding something cheap that will fit with the back seat.
ilovemud 09-12-2005, 05:41 PM so would i be ok with a 6 gallon fuel cell with 2, 5 gallon tanks to back it up would i be fine? i could keep like 40 gallons back at the tow vehicles. It will be towed everywhere and i will offroad all day but i guess at lunch i could go to the tow vehicle for more fuel if i need it the reason i want to go with a 6 gallon tank is that it's small i have the perfect place for it and its cheap.
chris demartini 09-12-2005, 05:46 PM Yeah i dont see why you couldnt
rocksteadyrobk 09-12-2005, 05:55 PM I run a 5 gallon.. I use almost a whole tank with a day of wheeling with a 3.5liter V6. I did it because the rig is a comp jeep.. I would go 10 gallon min if I was you.
pmaddy 09-12-2005, 05:58 PM I hate messing with Jerry cans so I like having a bigger tank.
