: Transmission Troubles

Hi,Ive got a 72 cj5 with a 232 i6 t14 and d20. Im going to build it up in stages, the first stage is basically my current setup w/ soa and 33's and a few other minor mods. I know its going to be pushing it with the 3 spd to run 33's (took my first trip on a real highway doing 70-80, and it kept up pretty well, but I can see how bad it would be with some huge tires), but its pretty temporary (as long as it takes to get all the parts for stage 2). Anyway, as it is, the gears are almost impossible to get into. I already tightened up the clutch linkage, and that took care (mostly) of the grinding it was doing. So what my jeep book says is to clean the shifter rails, and this takes care of most problems w/ entering a gear. I pulled the floor covering over the tranny to look, and where the diagram in my book says there should be plugsd, theres just dirt. Im about to pull the top of the transmission off and disassemble it and clean it real well, but before I do, I wanted to see if theres anything wierd or any tricks I should know about? Also, does this sound like a reasonable cause for my shifting problem? I dont want to rebuild my tranny totally b/c Im swapping it out with something with a granny gear soon, so theres no real point in rebuilding it totally. What else could it be besides the rails? The clutch is pretty good, but the linkage always loosens itself.

Thanks
Phineas

-I searched first, but theres nothing on t14's, or about plling the topend of the transmission. I know this is a basic question, but I asked at ju and although theyve helped alot with my stupider questions, they told me I could get a t18 for $1200 that would bolt up (Thats about all the money Ive got)

For 1200.00 go find a decently running waggy and swap everything over.(dana 44's -360 v-8-stout tranny)do your SOA when you swap out the axles .....use the waggy springs even....you will be good to go w/35's.....weld the diffs and when you get $ get gears . Have fun

Thats the final plan, but for now, Im just trying to fix what i got to run 33's for a few months while I get all my real parts.
Thanks,

Anyone have any other suggestions besides a new tranny
