: Lincoln Lockers Front and Rear??
phineas 03-12-2002, 05:43 PM I know a lot of people do this on offroad only vehicles, but does anyone here have a street legal jeep that they drive a lot w/ welded front and rear. This is temporary (til I get my new axles
), so Im not going to put any real money into them. I was just wondering what street characteristics it gives it (I dont care about the tires - Im picking up some 33 tsls for like $100). Its already a bitch on turns, so I have to take them kind of slow already. Plus it would be awesome to actually have real 4wd - weve used the comealong one too many times.:skull:
Thanks
Phineas
RCKRATZ 03-12-2002, 06:01 PM you wouldn't be able to tell on the street in the front, and there are many people on here that will tell you that it would be cool to do in the rear....... I say go for it.
Chrisjeep7 03-12-2002, 06:20 PM is it going in a YJ TJ or CJ in a cj i would say do it...i have a welded rear and the thing i like about it is i know what it is going to do....in the front if you have a yj or tj dont weld the front you cant turn if you are not rolling or if the motor dies...
o and try seaching cuz i think we went over this a week ago:flipoff2:

phineas 03-12-2002, 07:03 PM its a 72 cj5, and I checked the posts and they were great on how to do it, but i couldnt find much about how they handle. I think Ill do it, because its really solid and predictable compared to a real locker.
Thanks
Phineas
Any others' advice would be great
CannonBall 03-12-2002, 08:40 PM think about it, with the hubs unlocked does it matter whats in the front diff, it has nothing to do with onroad performance. Fawkin newbies.

Josh 89XJ 03-12-2002, 09:20 PM I've got a welded rear and I would take it over my old locker any day. It is 100% predictable. No more of the "downshift and guess which lane you are going to shoot into" game. No more popping, banging, shock loads, etc. Weld it solid and don't look back.
For the front, if you have a late model TJ, XJ, ZJ, WJ, or whatever with the one piece shafts and no hubs, the front can be a bitch. The disconnect axle can be rigged with a cable and you get a poor man's OX. Makes turning the same as with an open.
If your '5 is all stock as your sig states, you still have a spicer 27 front end. If you weld that up and wheel over rocks, you'll be breaking axle u-joints . I'd just weld the back 44.
scouter77 03-13-2002, 01:25 AM I welded the front of a buddies jeep(locker rear/welded front) (YJ) All it does on the street is when he goes the driveshaft spins (the pass side is de-coupled) He swears by it. Loves it offroad and says its very tolerable. I welded the rear on my scout and for now its my daily driver. I drive over 60 miles/day round trip. I love it too. NOTHING compares offroad and its fun when its rainy. I would do it again and never look back. Best (and cheapest) mod I have done.
brimy311 03-13-2002, 07:09 AM i am welded front and rear on my YJ, i have a d44 front and a d60 rear...i also have a big motor, so my d44 tends to eat shafts if i am not too carefulk, but just tack weld the caps in and drive straight as much as possible and you will be ok...
welded rear rocks! this is my Daily driver
Fawk_Yall 03-13-2002, 08:35 PM How does the welded front feel on a snowy freeway? I'd do this now if it wasn't my daily driver.
brimy311 03-14-2002, 04:27 AM i have not driven in it in the snow with it locked in, i just drive in 2wd  i would only lincoln lock the front if you have locking hubs...if not..forget it:usa:
also this way, when you slide off into the ditch, you can just climb right out:p
aaronlosey 03-14-2002, 01:09 PM hey, ya started a thread where everybody didn't jump you. since really seem to want to be hardcore, your gonna have to learn to just weld the thing up when your drunk and figure out what you did latter. i say just do it, you seem to want to get rid of everything after awhile, just live with what you did in the mean time. their is no substitute for experience, but it helps going in with a bit of knowledge.
if you fawk it up to badly you can always just toss the carrier and spiders and put in a detroit or spool. do the rear first and drive it around. if you love it, try the front too.
AZ94YJScott 03-14-2002, 03:45 PM How exactly do you weld the diff. I have stock axles and am swithching them out soon. I also have a welder and do not want to waste money on these peices of shit under my jeep. Does anyone know of a write up with pics.
