: LT1 motor swap
downsideup 09-13-2005, 06:19 AM Hey, Did a search for this but kept getting errors? I am new to the jeep community as far as owning one. I have been going with a friend and have got to know a lot of things. I just baught a 95 YJ and am about to shoe horn a LT1 350 w/ TH350 tranny. I was wondering if anyone else has done this and is there a wiring kit for this or do you have any pics and tips on doing the swap. I have an E-mail to Painless waiting for responce. Thanks Guys!!
MrWillys 09-13-2005, 06:28 AM the problem with the search function is that it has to 4 characters. I just searched "Jeep chevy swap" and couldn't find anything specific. You might try http://www.novak-adapt.com/ . Be careful here though the last thing "Jeep talk" is about is Jeeps. These guys are "hardcore" rockcrawlers. I think this means thier keyboards sit on gravel or something.
JohnnyJ 09-13-2005, 07:46 AM MrWillys - you have over 700 posts... it would almost seem that you are one of "us". In fact, I even saw you post a near flame the other day..
For three letters, add a star. LT1*
Also expand out your search to Gen4x4, and maybe even other areas.
mcjeep84 09-13-2005, 08:03 AM Good luck getting a response from Painless, they never responded to my emails. If you have a 95-97 LT1 they have you retofit a bunch of stuff back to a 94 which is not mentioned in the harness descriptions. My engine came from a 96 vette and it was much more difficult than it should have been. There is probably an easier harness to work with.
downsideup 09-13-2005, 08:57 AM Thanks for the replies guys. The motor is actually comeing out of a 94 Z28 so maybe it will be easier. I will try search again. Before I kept getting "No site Found " or something of the sort. Kind of like when you type in an web address that does not exist. Yup still have not heard anything from Painless. Theres some good publicity.
Steve N 09-13-2005, 09:50 AM there are a few companies that produce one, turbo city i think, street performance, painless, and others pick up a hot rod mag, or search using google.
JohnnyJ 09-13-2005, 01:07 PM I think Howell makes one, too. (there should be links to them in the search or via google)
DDawg16 09-13-2005, 03:59 PM I'm almost done with putting a 94 5.7L TBI in my 84 CJ. I found the Novak site to a lot of help...I'm also using their adapter. A few points...
1. Expect it to cost more than you think...the adapter alone is over $500. New exahust is going to be that much as well. As long as you don't get carried away and doing a frame up restore like I am....assume about $2K for all the misc items.
2. Why the TH350? Old tranny. The 700R is has 4 speeds + lockup converter and is tougher. If your doner engine came out of a car with an auto...you really need that auto. I'm not 100% sure of the TPI (I assume it's a Gen II TPI engine), but some of the computers also contained the controls for the tranny. In my case, I have the 4L60E which is basically an electronic version of the 700R. My computer controls the tranny.
3. Don't be afraid to do the harness yourself. Nothing changes on the engine side, just the computer side...and even then, only a few wires. I think I have about 10-12 wires to splice...and mostly for the VSS buffer and ALDL connector.
3. Pay attention to state smog laws. Basically, your jeep will become a 94 Camero as fas as smog is concerned. Keep it the way it was in the Camero....otherwise, you may not pass local smog laws or be able to sell it.
4. If you don't have a CV driveshaft now, plan on getting one. Your going to loose about 3" off the rear driveshaft.
There are a lot more details...email me if you have more questions....
And......good luck.
Rock Tech 09-14-2005, 06:10 AM I have a '93/'94 LT1 from a Z28 in my CJ-7 with a Painless harness. Everything went together easy and I didn't have any problems (it actually started on the 1st try). This was the first OBD-I swap I did and the number of sensors & wiring looked bad at first, but everything in the painless harness is clearly labeled and all the plugs match.
Tobias 09-14-2005, 08:50 AM I just baught a 95 YJ and am about to shoe horn a LT1 350 w/ TH350 tranny.
Why a TH350?
Figured there would be billions of these conversion on the web.
One of the guys I know just did an LT1 from a 94 Camero in a 87 YJ and he kept the 700R4 ( whatever the new version is called ) and got the AA adapter for it and put on an Atlas. Built his own motor mounts. The only problem he had is with the alt ( below ) and the speed sensor ring on the trans adapter started to spin on him so the tranny wouldn't shift.
These guys don't like painless harness anymore, so I think they used a Howell harness. It was also cheaper than the painless. Just be carefull to put a resistor or idiot lite in the "ignitor" wire for the LT1 alt. If it sees a full switched 12V when it is running, it will fry. ( Might not be a problem for you in a 95 YJ. )
Also to add to the above, this was not a cheap conversion. Also beware that if you keep the LT1 exhaust manifold, it had a unique flange pattern for a couple of years. So get the Y pipe too so you can cut the flanges off of it. If you are going to do the headers thing, no problem then.
Kaiser5 09-14-2005, 10:03 AM The latest issue of 4Wheel Drive & Sport Utility (Oct?) just had a feature on putting an LT-1 in a Scrambler. Haven't read the article yet, but from a quick look it appeared to be pretty indepth.
chevpete 09-14-2005, 12:25 PM i am in the middle of a LT1 swap and the easyway is to get the factory harness and pcm and send it out to be modifyed to to remove all the veheical related wires and to change the pcm programing to run the engine as stand alone(with out transmision) this should only cost $150 to rework the harness and $250 to reprogram the pcm you have to reprogram the pcm as the LT1 will not run without the factory transmission and dont forget that if you plan on changing any parts on the LT1 like cam and exhaust do it before you reprogram the pcm cos if you change things later you then have to have your pcm reprogramed again
Kaiser5 09-14-2005, 02:30 PM you have to reprogram the pcm as the LT1 will not run without the factory transmission
Not true. When I did my LT-1 swap the biggest hurdle was defeating the VATS. I used a stock ecm and it will pull codes for the auto but it WILL also let the motor run fine. I run an SM465 behind mine and it runs great.
downsideup 09-14-2005, 09:35 PM Hey, ALOT OF GOOD INFO HEAR GUYS. THANKS. THE TRANNY IS A TURBO 350 NOT SURE WHAT THE DIFFERANCE IS BETWEEN THE NEW ONE AND THE OLD. IT COULD BE A NEW ONE BUT THE GUY I AM GETTING IT FROM IS OLD SCHOOL AND JUST CALLS IT A TURBO 350. I STILL HAVE A CHOISE OF A TRANNY SO IF THERE ARE ANY SUGGESTIONS I AM OPEN.
PAINLESS GOT BACK TO ME WITH A PART# SO I HAVE TO SEE WHAT THE COST IS. I AM WONDERING HOW HARD IT WOULD BE TO DO MY OWN WIRING BASED OFF THE WIRING SCHEMATICS. I DONT MIND A LITTLE WORK TO SAVE $. ANY MORE INFO IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.
