background: 1.6 16v auto cat removed evap canister removed, smells rich at times 2" exhaust with a $12.99 meijer special muffler (i got it cause it was small)
i get about 10-11 mpg (driving to the trail) with 3-4psi in 38's, there isnt much torque down low, is this just because i have an auto? or the 16v power curve?
any suggestions or knowledge of whats wrong?

What are you geared at? Also, I ran a year or so without the cat and 2 1/4" S/S exhaust. My EFI would not make up the diff in fuel and it ran RICH. I put the cat back on and presto everything was fine again. :D

Autos also eat a lot of horsepower. They need a lot to work correctly. :(

If you haven't adjusted your speedometer or if it's not geared the same as stock, it will usually read lower than what you actually get. The only way to be real accurate is to use a GPS on a trip. Also, with the 1.6 and 38's hopefully you have some big axles, right?--that's going to consume power. Also an automatic? Sounds about right even without correction.

im 2-3% over driven from stock and i wouldnt have thought the added weight would make that big of a difference, right now im just trying to make it as good as it can be and then ill decide whether i need the 2.0 or not.... my biggest problem is getting the truck to launch out of the whole in low range when im trying to bump something
i really have no room to put a cat back on it. i do have an adjustable timing gear, anyone know if they actually help move the power around or just look cool?
edit: 5.89s in the diffs and i dont have my speedo hooked up, i used a gps and 3 days on the trail

What exact transfercase gearing?
38's, beadlocks? steel rims? what the hell axles you running, D44's? winch? bumpers? armor?
You must have at least 1000 lbs of extra weight over stock, if you have most or all of that stuff.
I dare say that would effect mileage...

my guess is that im 3200lbs
i have a kicker 2 and toy case- 4.1:1, im might go with a 4.7 in the toy case and im already planning on a lighter walker/irok combo

Sounds like you could to low on the gear already.with that much gear it should jump unless there is a problem with the converter

I wheeled with a 1.6 8V that had an auto trany and two gear boxes (one being a Dana 300 with 4:1's) and 39" crawlers. He couldn't bump anything, not enough power from that motor. I have a 1.6 16v with dual toy cases, 5spd, 5.13's and 42's, I put it in double low and used 3rd gear to climb a rock face that was over a story tall, had no problem spinning the tires. There's video of it in the Gen 4x4 section. All the rigs with more torque climbed the wall easier. I stayed in the gas for fear of bogging down towards the top  Autos really need about 200hp going into them to properly bump stuff IMO.

That can't be helping. You know how much drag you have running 38s with 3-4psi in them??.......A LOT
Probably won't help much, but you could try running 30psi or so in the 38s to the trail, then air down.

I wheeled with Jermey Parriot From BFE films and his buggy had a 16v infront of an auto. He said it sucked with the stock torqconverter. He also said that he tried a couple differnet things before he had a guy work over the converter. He said after that it made a world of difference. His buggy kicked ass and could drive just about everything. But even with that I noticed that it still kinda lacked in the "hole shot" department next to a manual with a clutch.

The guy who bought that buggy was wheeling with us two weekends ago, the auto tranny was giving him all sorts of problems and by the time we got to the trail it wouldn't shift.

Sounds like time for a 2.0 upgrade. Sorry I didn't get to wheel with you much at the Melt. Work done to the truck looks great by the way. :smokin:

thanks, well have to run some trails next year for sure :smokin:
i think im goingn to try 4.7 toy gears, lighter wheels and tires, adjustable cam gear and maybe a higher stall in the torque converter, if that doesnt get it then ill go with the 2.0.......
