Just bought a 1990 454 GMC Suburban w/ 105,000 miles. Runs great and didn't miss a beat driving 3000 miles from Oregon to NC. Jiffy Lube here advised I do their oil sludge removal service where they flush accumulated gunk out of the engine. I've heard pros and cons and wanted to see if anyone had heard of problems after doing it. Thanks!

So it runs great and Im assuming it doesn't leak. Then you want to chemically remove all the sludge that is holding the seals together? Why mess with a good thing? Im sure the Jiffy Lube techs are masters at this  but you might want to hold off.

i have to wonder how much they teach the guys at Jiffy lube or any other LUBE shop. the one here changed my wifes oil and stripped the drain plug on her first oil change. then THEY replaced the pan a couple of days later. they cut off all the plastic sheilding around the belts and under carriage to change the pan...real smart fellows.
just to add my .02 the oil should changed every 3000 miles. and use something good like Valvoline, I hate to see a good engine messed up by ignorance. I built engines at the chevy dealer for 11 years, nothing worse then not doing your maintenance.

So you build engines but let Jiffy lube change your oil
If the Burb runs good then leave it alone.. Either way no matter what you do stay away from Jiffy lube..

I think I made mention that my WIFE had her oil changed there...I got a new hoist out of the deal.
ps, my wife used to get in hurry about me getting things done for her, but not so anymore.

Thanks, guys! I think "if it ain't broke...." I'd sure hate to turn a totally non leaking engine into the Exxon Valdez....

I wouldn't dare do that to a chevy engine... the oil's what holds the thing together. Trying to get my power steering to re-stick itself as we speak after I got carried away with the pressure washer.
But, my wife's lil mazda sat in the back yard with a bad water pump for over a year. When I got it fixed, it ran just fine, but after I did the sludge removal in it, the thing pepped up like it ran 50k ago. Much improved difference.

I work for a GM dealer, and GM advises not doing oil flushes on there engines new or old. They say it causes more problems than it can ever do good. Ive seen some that have been done that were running fine before the flush and then left with a knock or a missfire or something else. So im with the others on why fix it if its not broke. My .02$ :grinpimp:

Since it is running fine....don't go looking for reasons to make it not run fine.

I have used the Marvelous Marvins Mystery oil stuff before to remove sludge from my Chevy engines. I add a quart just before my 100,000 mile oil change. Never had a problem. Last engine I did it twice, once at each 100,000 miles. Plus I was getting ready for the third time, until I totaled the truck on a bridge. To bad too, she had 286,000 miles and ran just as strong as the day I got her.
I also have had the Chevy dealer do a top end flush on my wifes last Cavalier. From what I understand that is basically the same thing.
I was even looking for the Marvelous stuff last night, all I found was slick 50 crap, and the engine oil flush stuff from Gunk in a metal can.
Maybe I am just lucky, based on all the previous posts. Hmmm....
