: For all the D35C lovers...
crawlinTJ 03-12-2002, 08:18 PM It's because you haven't been in this position that makes you think the D35C is an OK axle.....

Drunk Guy 03-12-2002, 09:17 PM Just did the same thing this last weekend, and it sucked. full size time.
Recurve 03-13-2002, 05:07 AM That rig doesn't look like a heeper. It appears as though lots of thought went into the build up. Why then was the D35 not replaced before some of the other mods?
I can't tell from the pic but do those "tubes" strapped to the rear down tubes on the cage carry spare shafts? LOL
Hey crawlin TJ.
E mail me when you are ready to dump the DANA 35-c.
I want one for free incase I sell my jeep. ok?
redruM 03-13-2002, 07:29 AM yep mee too

I think it's "fairly" well built, nothing spectacular of course. The only real money is in the lift, lockers and transfer case. Most of the crap I made for it cause it's cheaper. As far as the rear end, this was a Moser shaft that I broke. They were in the jeep in this condition 33s, 4:1 and 2.5L for over a year....and I just broke one for the first time. I'm actually going to the Super35 because I can get a really good deal on it, but when I get a real job after school the real axles will go in. I was trying not to have to do an "in between" step with axles, as I want to go wider and stronger in one round, not 2 separate build-ups.
Yes the tubes carry shafts! :flipoff2:
My gf also drives a TJ that has the D35, so I have 2 jeeps to worry about breaking the axles in! :D
XtrmTJ 03-13-2002, 06:59 PM You are going to go with the Super 35 kit ? Dosent that still use the dreaded "C" clip ? Why not use the Warn Full Floater kit, it dose away with the "C" clip. Truss the thang, and wheel the heck outta it !  :D ;) :p

cause the warn kit still uses the small axle shafts, but we don't need to be having this argument.

The Super35 is cheaper and more pratical.
If I went with the 5/4.5 Warn kit, then I'd be replacing hubs every weekend. So to go with the 5 on 5.5 I need to do the front as well, yet I don't want to do anything to the D30 (and that pretty much doubles the cost). Then new wheels need to be bought. The Warn is still a 27 spline (vs the 30 spline Super35), and you can only make a 27 spline axle so strong (I've already broken the Moser 27 spline axles). No warranty on the Warn shafts, the Super35 shafts have a 5 year warranty against breakage (which means the company had done their homework if they have the nads to offer a warranty against breakage for a D35!!). The Super35 comes with the Detroit (which gets rid of the carrier) vs. buying the Warn kit and a Detroit.
Putting a few hundred into the D35 to get bigger, stronger and warrantied shafts is much more worth it to me than the cost of the Warn conversion. Believe me...I've thought it through. If I had the cash to convert, then I'd have the cash to upgrade alltogether as opposed to just the Super35.
Recurve 03-13-2002, 08:06 PM The point is not to break a shaft right? No need to worry about C-clips if you have 1.31" 30 spline hardened axle shafts. I can think of 2 other axles that run that size shaft. Weld a few beads on the tubes so they won't spin and the only thing you need to worry about is the pinion if you are running 4.56 or 4.88's and big tires and deploy the gas locker too much. I did the Super "Turd" upgrade on mine. I'm running 33's and a 2.5l and 4.88's.
LJRXJ 03-14-2002, 08:10 AM Oh geez, I am running 1990 XJ 31inches tires on dana 30 front and dana 35 rear. Do you think I should upgrade to something better? I am not extreme off roader but do somewhat off roader. If necessary, what is the minimum cost to upgrade something reasonable.

LOL, although it ain't know laughing matter. Heard of a guy that lost an eye and had lotsa reconstruction because of that.
LJRXJ, you should at least invest in a set of spare shafts or team with someone that has them. They're ~$100. If I were you I'd be visiting boneyards looking for a late 80's XJ's or WJ's with a D44. If you have stock gears you could be in it for as little as $250.

What about front axle dana 30? Should I upgrade that one, too? Or is it stronger than dana35? I want to know more detail before I buy lockers for those axles.
jbhawk 03-14-2002, 03:14 PM I feel you pain.
My whole housing shattered into marbles. Lost gears, an ARB and Warn full floater kit!!!!!
It still pains me inside.

If you stick with 31's you may never have a problem. The XJ D44 is a direct bolt in and I've seen them as low as $250. Spend some spare time looking for them. The D30 would be a PITA to replace. They're not as infamous as the D35 when it comes to axle breakages.
