: Need Tech Help W/ Swapping Axles
tigger4x 03-12-2002, 10:31 PM Backround : I am going end up in between axles for a short bit, I gotta drag the ones under it now to the buyer and bring back the ones I'm gettin' from CA.
The help I need is how to keep the front end up during the down time. I already have custom "jack stands" and receivers for the rear that keep it high enough so I can drop the axle as well as all of the suspension. Unfortunately I didn't get to having the front "jack stands" and receivers made.
I don't have the ways and means here to make what I need and don't have the cash for a cherry picker or hoist system.
Anybody had to do any "Mickey Mouse Engineering" to do this
emsoffroad 03-12-2002, 10:37 PM two rims welded together always seem to work at the yards, lay one down, stand one up, weld.
Here is a better one, buy some damn jackstands, you will need them in the future.:flipoff2:
cement blocks, large logs, ect.
SMART ASS 03-12-2002, 10:37 PM to be honest ife done shome crazy sheeat... i'll pm ya...
elf_cruiser 03-12-2002, 10:48 PM Don't use 1 single HI-Lift, hahaha

I don't have a welder here, don't have the ca$h for jack stands, cement blocks go :nuke:!!, and IF I had a chainsaw for the logs I'd get it from yer front yard! :flipoff2: ;)
emsoffroad 03-12-2002, 11:37 PM You said you didn't have the money for a hoist, or chery picker. Since they are more $ then the jack stands, just thought I would throw that out. They are handy to have, will never have to many. How am I to know you don't have a welder, or friend with one. And my yard is where I get the logs, so please come on over. We can cut as many as you want and then throw back a few:beer:
Also about the cement blocks, I have yet to have one :nuke: I have a few vehicles sitting around with cement blocks under them. And they have been there for a few years. Just stand them upright, and don't beat on them with a hammer.
Im4yotas 03-13-2002, 12:34 AM You mean to say that you are to fawking cheap to put up 20 bucks for some jackstands that won't break while you're under the truck? Gimme a friggin break! Maybe you could put a big fawkin rock under it:flipoff2:  :flipoff2:

HEY DERF!! :flipoff2: I just anted up for my STAR and another $20 to BLUE RIBBON.
I have a FULL SIZE '76 Cherokee. I already have a set of 3 TON and and set of 4 TON jackstands and they won't reach. I am going to be pulling the axles out, so where am I supposed to place the stands? And just where are you getting "highlift" jackstands? :rolleyes:And they were ONLY $20/pair?!?
BTW ... the whole powertrain has been vacated. :D
Tony Sobrito 03-13-2002, 08:56 AM after hours go to a residential construction site where they are framing some homes. drive around and look for the "beam saw", its usually a huge trailered radial arm saw. you can get some real nice beam cut offs from the scrap pile there. i am not talking 4"x4" i am talking 12"x12" etc.. i love mine and they are free. harbor freight has some decent 5 ton jackstands too :)

If they're free why do you have to go "after hours"?
NE-RokToy 03-13-2002, 11:27 AM cement blocks oriented the right wau are plenty strong, just orient cinder blocks so the openings are facing up and place a peice of wood on top of them before to distribute the load. I would try and find 4 cinder blocks, place 2 side by side with a peice of wood and a jackstand on top right behind each front spring hanger. Your vehicle is spring under so you don't need to jack it up to get the spings and axle out hell you just have to unbolt the springs from the axle and the shackle and rotate them down and roll the front axle out witht he tires still on it!
tigger4x 03-13-2002, 07:00 PM Getting the beam scraps from a construction site sounds good, but I think I'll go by when the guys are around. A lot of the sites around here gate up  guard dogs to catch the would be thieving fawker. The 5 TON jackstands would be nice, BUT I already have a set of 3 & 4 TON stands. ;)
 I also have a few of the blocks. And I think I have some 1/2" ply to top them with. With the stands on topof 'em, it just might work. :rasta::D
 to NE-Rok Toy BTW, I have an SOA, but I thnk its all good.

I just bought a pair of 6 tons from Harbor Freight on sale for $19. They're 24" tall when fully extended. So you already have two pairs of short ones huh? So did I and figure you can't have too many sets of jackstands.
tigger4x 03-14-2002, 12:10 AM Are they still on sale?!?! Just saw an old lady creeping by, I think I can still catch her ... :D

Yah, those are the ones I was talking about. And if those aren't big enough, the 12 ton stands are about 36" or so.:D But they're like $50. But I cheat. They go on sale, I use my emp discount, and wallah! $20 And the 6 ton 24 inchers held my truck up by the frame for a month, so without wheels on, you should be fine with those.
Sorry if I came off like a jackass, but a guy my friend knows just got killed when his poorly suspended vehicle fell on him about a month ago. It's just not worth risking it. It's also always a good idea to have somebody else around when wrenching under the rig. This guy was alone, and his wife found his crushed body a few hours later. If someone was there, they could have called an ambulance, and saved his life.
Please be smart when working under your rig.
Sorry bout the sermon, but it's an important thing.
AZFord4x4 03-14-2002, 04:05 AM damn dude, if it'll get your rig together I'll loan ya my set of stands for a while... they goto somewhere around 24-30", can't remember... PM me or sumthin, I could probably get them to ya this weekend
oh BTW, we're setting up a fullsize run on Highway 2 Hell... could be interesting if ya want to come spectate.
tigger4x 03-14-2002, 08:14 PM YOTA ... I kinda figured you were razzing me so I had to razz ya back.:p I feel the same way about safety and working on my rig. Since I moved out here I really don't have my regular extra hands to make the magic happen. I was just hoping to find a :emb:cheap way to remedy the situation without compromising what little I have saved to go fetch my 60 & 14!:D Sorry to hear about your buddies friend. RIP!!
Fullsizes Rule ... Man, you are the :nuke:!! I am gonna check out HF and see what the deal is over there. Iffin I can't get 'em in time I'll definitely take you up on your offer!! I gotta clear a hole in the garage so I can get the :jeep: in, but once that is ready I'll PM ya no doubt!
BTW, when are you going to do H2H?!? I have been swamped at work with only one day off a week. Lemme know and maybe I can make the grand escape outta here. Thanks!!
AZFord4x4 03-15-2002, 03:38 AM I only paid $20 for that set at HF... up at 35th & Bethany about 2 or 3 years ago... but I'm not in need of them right now, & they're just sitting. I got a cherry picker sitting & collecting dust too if ya ever need to borrow that.
The H2H run is more or less in the "who's interested" stage, but once we have a date set I'll let ya know.
tigger4x 03-15-2002, 06:24 PM Fullsizes Rule ... Gonna check HF's .com to see if they got 'em on special these days to get a price idea. BUT I will be giving you a call here real soon about the stands an picker. What yer  o' choice?!?
As far as H2H goes, keep me up to date and I'll bust my donkey to get time off. Thanks again!!

Dont use 2 either:D:D:...honestly(from experience that I am not proud of)I would buy the damn jack stands...get the ones from harbor freight they are tall and seem to be beefy enough to last a while...
I have had my vehicle fall three times and everytime it was my fault cause I "mickey moused" my jackstands to get more height or I used two hi lifts...one of the times it fell completely off all jacks/jackstands and the leaf sping pinned me to the ground...not fun expecially when its in the middle of tghe day and nobody is around to help or hear you screaming for that matter:( do it right I say...just my $.02

i was searching last night and saw a pic of some cool high lift jackstands
the base was a steel wheel and in the center it was reciever stock about a foot high and then coming out of that was smaller stock just like some jackstands. im gonna make some of those if i can find the pic again.:(
