ok ive got a simple question. do i bolt up the torque converter to the flex plate, then put the tranny in that way, or have the torque converter on the splines of the tranny then put it in.

thanks

On my 700R4, I bottomed the Torque converter drive dogs into the tranny. I bolted up the flexplate to the crank. I then bolted up the tranny. The torque converter should be about 3/32-1/8" away from flex plate. Then you push the torque converter to the flex plate and tighten it down. HTH.

Put the converter in the tranny first. Make sure you get it in the pump and stator, you will fell two notches. If you try to do it the other way you will never get them to line up.

I can not strees enough that you should put the converter in the trans fist. When I was working at the trans shop still at least half of the comebacks we had on customer installed autos happened from the converter going on the input and in the pump cockeyed or never having been put on all the way before it went up. It was bad enough we started installing the converter before they picked it up!

When you install the trans out the converter in the trans and turn it until it skips on all of the splines, it should make a good solid "clunk" and be almost touching or on the bellhousing. If you are going to need to tip the trans a lot to get it in take a wrench and bolt it to the converter so it preses on the bellhousing and holds the converter in place. When you get the trans up and on the dowel pins check that the converter is NOT touching the fly wheel. If it is pull it out and reseat the t/c. As you tighten the bellhousing to the block make sure the converter is not touching the flywheel, it it hits it something is wrong....take it out and reseat the t/c. Carefull when you snug it up to, you can crack a trans trying to run down the top bolts first before it is 100% on the dowel pins.

thanks guys, here is what i did. i tried it both ways, i first tried it with the torque converter on the flex plate, then i figured that wasnt right, then i put it in the transi got all the converter right, it did do the clank. so i starterd torquing it down. it seemed everything was right, and it was so close. the dowel pins were in and it was about half an inch from going in and the bolts got hard to turn, and bang, broke a chuck of aluminum off. what sucks is its a c6 and its all once peice. so i decided i should ask what the hell i was doing after i fucked up.

some times the ears can be welded back on good enough to be ok.

I ran a TH400 for a long time that didn't even have one of the upper ears:eek:

I couldn't concur more.... :) I had a heck of a time trying to get my tranny pushed into the torque converter during my swap, and in retrospect, I wish I would have put the converter on the tranny first..

Don't know about a C6, but for some GM autos, you can buy an aftermarket bellhousing, you cut off the stock one and bolt on the new one. Try doing a search on ColoradoK5 for ultrabel (?), sombody there did one a month or 2 ago.

Also, (don't quote me on this), but on a GM 700R4, I think there are 3 "clunks" (could be a lockup converter thing).
