: hesitation when accelerating
Tydes 03-12-2002, 11:21 PM I have a 1975 scout with the 304, manual. When I am shifting from 2nd to third, I get this large lag of power. It then takes a second or two of deadness, then kicks back in. I first looked towards the carb. I first rebuilt the carb myself... no luck. I then bought a rebuilt factory carb and put it in myself. I then went and got it tuned and they said it was warped. So I then bought another carb and stuck that on, and the hesitation is still there after being prof. tuned and timed off cyl 8? Does anybody have any ideas? I did check out the vacumn system and there is no leaks in that. I am an engine rookie, and would gladly accept any advice. Thanks, Ian
TxScout 03-13-2002, 08:03 AM I haven't seen the 304 block, but on my 345, it says on the valvle covers to time off of #5 cyl. Just a thought.

???
Every IH V-8 I have heard of is timed off #8. Something different about yours. You sure you have IH valve covers?
TxScout 03-13-2002, 08:34 AM Hmm...that's weird, maybe my valve covers are old and worn out. Maybe I misread the 8 as a 5:confused: Good thing I haven't started adjusting the carb yet...

OK I guess I have to take back the other comment I made about DAN having skills. So much promise and then this. Were you drinking  when you read this. :D
Hoop is absolutely correct off number 8.

tsm1mt 03-13-2002, 09:40 AM Sounds like the accelerator pump is fouled up.
Does it also flat-spot on the 1-2 shift? 3-4?
My problem - even with a brand new 350cfm 2300 - was that the accelerator pump was blowing it's wad too soon.
I ended up going with smaller squirters in the top of the carb, and adjusted the acc pump "ramp".
Do I remember what I changed 'em to? NOPE! :D It required help.
If you roll on the gas smooth n' slow, doe s it still hesitate?
Tydes 03-13-2002, 07:29 PM how would I check the accelerator pump? Is this something I could do on my own? There is some other small hesitations, but the most significant is between 2 and 3.

Take the air filter off.. fire it up.. climb up in the engine bay and look down the carb (hint - do NOT set yourself on fire.. you've been warned!)
Watch the "squirters" in the top center (near the air filter stud) while you slowly "roll on" the gas by working the throttle arm manually.
Now let it go back down to idle.. and SNAP the throttle hard.. and watch the squirts.
In mine, I had a quick shot of a LOT of fuel (caused a momentary rich condition) and then no fuel, (lean now) and then the main jets (farther down into the carb) started dumping fuel.
Smaller squirters made a big improvement. Instead of dumping the entire acc pump shot at once, it made it slow down and send a little fuel for a long time.
Get a good carb book and brush up. :-)
Or order a ProJection. :D
Tydes 03-13-2002, 09:41 PM Thanks for all your help. I will try it this weekend.
