: t-case solenoid
Tydes 09-16-2005, 03:54 PM I had trouble shifting into 4 low with my 94 discovery, so i ended up removing the solenoid and it shifted fine. When I put a new solenoid back in, it will not shift again. I would like to keep the solenoid in there, any ideas on what could be causing this?
Roverhound 09-16-2005, 04:34 PM The solenoid.
NoCalwheelin 09-16-2005, 04:56 PM I am trying to find the solenoid now on mine and pull it out or replace it.Did you pull yours out the top with the console off?
Thanks
Tydes 09-16-2005, 04:58 PM You have to go in from the top to take it out. Remove the console and then drill out the rivets. Looking down the hole, there are 4 8mm bolts on the top of a round cover, (just to the rear of the t-case linkage. Just remove that and the solenoid will be right there. There will be a little plug going to it.
NoCalwheelin 09-16-2005, 05:01 PM The rivets around the tranfer case shifter boot?
Tydes 09-16-2005, 05:14 PM those, as well as the ones that go around the auto shifter black ring. After those are removed, you are right above the solenoid. Are you going to just take yours out, or replace it? You don't have to worry about disconnecting any of the linkage to the shift selector, it will pull out and you can set it in the passenger footwell. this sight helped a lot.

NoCalwheelin 09-16-2005, 05:23 PM I am going to remove it when I find it....lol..
If you drill all the rivots out then what did you replace them with? It looks like the auto trans shifter is around the back plate and it is held in by the rivots in the outer plate. If you drill all the rivots around thea auto shifter then how does the shifter lift out when it is attached to transmisson.
Also it looks like when I do remove the solenoid it will leave a big hole. Should I fill it with something?
Thanks.. I need a manual...

the shifter is actuated by a cable-there should be enough slack to allow for removal. Once you remove the plate with the solenoid, you can remove the solenoid from the plate and replace the plate. Use some silicone to seal the hole where the wires come through.
I recently picked up a transfer case from a gentleman who told me it was frozen... Yep, the solenoid was frozen! I rescued it from the tip-the price was right!
NoCalwheelin 09-16-2005, 08:26 PM So I uplugged the round connector that goes to the side of the solenoid and it gets a 13V constantly. Then I hooked up my meter to the small rectangle connector that goes to the wires that go into the hole beside the solenoid and when I had it in N with the brake on it went to 13V. So this tells me the wiring is good. I also measured the round connnector at the end going into the solenoid and read and "open" circuit which I would think shows the coil in the solenoid opened and it is bad.
When you pull out the solenoid is there a open hole? Also I can put my arms around each side of the transfer case and think I can unscrew the bolts from the bottom..just might be hard to see anything to fill the holes.
Also where do the wires go in the small hole? I guess these activate the solenoid?
Tydes 09-16-2005, 09:32 PM When you pull the solenoid out there is an open hole. You can see down to some selector shaft. IF you need a new solenoid I have two. I don't understand what you meant by reach around from both sides. I don't think that will be possible. there isn't much room to get the wrench on those nuts when accessing from the top. DId you drill out the rivets yet??
NoCalwheelin 09-17-2005, 12:23 AM I got the solenoid out and it is shifting into 4WD Low again. What a stupid design. There is no way I would stick another solenoid in there. It is bound to just go bad again being exposed in the transfer case like that. I would have put in a thin gasket or something to protect the solenoid better.
After taking out the center console I realize what a mess it was to cut all that stuff out and go in from the top. So I laid on my back and was able to stick my left hand on the passenger side and feel the solenoid and my right hand around the drivers side back of xfer case. I got the four bolts out and grab some pliers and stuck them up there and twisted the cover that holds the solenoid in it and it popped off. Took the bad solenoid out and cleaned up the cover and put some RTV in the crack where the wires once went through. Then crawled back under the truck and put the cover back on.
It took me alittle over a hour to lay on my back and take it out. I can't believe people have took their transfer case out to replace this. Crazy.. :flipoff2:
I guess it is hard if you are not use to working by feel as you can't see anything. There is plenty of room to get my small 1/4 drive to remove the four screws.
Thanks for the help guys.
Puffdragon 09-17-2005, 04:36 PM Your just asking for trouble to put the solinoid back in. Why would you want it anyway, Its just another dummy device. The older T-cases didnt even have these.
Oh, and yea, its alot less agressive to remove the solinoid from under the truck.
Good job NOCALWHEELIN for sratching your brain about it.

I scratch up my arms alittle....but it was worth it going down from underneath.
Bush65 09-18-2005, 03:46 AM My understanding is that solenoids were only fitted to LT230's for the North American and Japanese markets.
JSBriggs 09-18-2005, 07:03 PM some info here (http://www.roverunited.com/tech/land-rover-lt-230-transfer-case/land-rover-lt-230-conversion.htm) (found it will looking for more info on RoverTruck60's truck)

Tydes 09-18-2005, 09:15 PM Thanks for the advice, I am now solenoidless!
PTSchram 09-19-2005, 08:13 AM The trucks with manual trannys didn't have the solenoid either.
