I am want to gain some more low end torque or lugging ability on my Chevy SB 305 and was curious to know if I could use a heavier flywheel. Anybody ever gone to a heavier unit? I am running the sbc in a fj40.
I know the Toyota f, 2F engines have a monster sized flyweel on them. Toyota must know something. Do different Chevy truck applications have heavier flywheels than cars? My engine came out of a early 80s Chevy car. What would the pros and Cons be? Any suggestions appreciated.

Never done it on a cheby v8 motor but many V6 guys do them.
Inertia rings can be purchased to be bolted onto 2.5 cylinder jeep motors. and I am going to be using a flywheel on my ford 302 that is a bigger and heavier then what came on 5.0 mustangs.
SO Sure why not I guess it can be done.

I just don't know abpout the 4.0. Maybe a shop can make one for you ( Expensive )
For my Ford 5.0 motor I am going to use a 300 straight six flywheel out of a mid 80's f series truck I then had it rebalanced.
have them ad weight rather then drill the flywheel to balance it.
more expensive I think but better I guess.
Do a search for inertia rings for jeeps call the guy that makes them and see about a 4.0 version.
For the chevy motors well I just cant comment on them because I don't know them.
just look around the junk yard to see if their is a bellhousing flywheel combo that is larger that will bolt up thats what I did.
Usually end up able to use a larger clutch too.

You could use a 168 tooth flywheel that accomidates a 12" clutch.

What transmission and clutch are you using?

I'm using an NP435. The bellhousing I have is an aluminum one with hydro slave bracket on it.
Clutch is just whatever came in a 1986 F-250 with a 4 speed and a 302.

Like Keith mentioned..there are two flywheels for the SBC (at least the older ones:flipoff2: ) I think they were the 153 tooth and the 168 tooth ones. I have a 168 on my 305 and it lopes pretty good. Check at the local wrecker for the 168 one if you don't already have it. They were used on most trucks I believe.

Looks like a marine engine.
If you got your SB 305 out of a car get yourself a harmonic balancer for a truck. The truck Harmonic is a lot larger/heavier.
