Hey Guys,
I was wondering if a 31 spline Detroit locker for the 9 inch is what i need for a 1979 Broco Rear end. I looked around in search and didnt say anthing that indicated it wouldnt work am i Right ? A 31 spline carrier will drop into the 3rd. I am not to familiar with the different bearing cap sizes. Is the 79 rears the axle with the 3.25 bearing seats? Or "H" case ?

Stock carrier bearings were 2.891" or 3.062" the 3.25" is aftermarket only. I don't know a way to tell which it is without pulling and measuring.

What is an H-case? I think that is what i have and that's why I cant find bearings for my stock centrsection. Is there PN's on Detroit's?

If you end up having a case with the aftermarket 3.25" bearings and still want to run stock 31 spline shafts, send me a PM. I have the ford motorsports detroit locker to fit it. Trachtech doesn't have a number for it.

2.891 was stock in most early 80s trucks

yOUR 9' STOCK IS 31 SPLINE, An H case locker is a 35 spline locker with 31 spline side gears. These are used in nascar, I purchased one off of ebay and it has 3.250 bearings. So I had to buy another pumpkin. A stock 31 spline locker is what you want, or a traction lock depending on what your application is?

The other guys are correct, Most bearings are the 2.89". I have a 79 bronco/F150 rear and it is 2.89" As they said the H case i.e. 35 spline locker has 3.250" bearings and fits aftermarket pumpkins. Prices start around $200.00 and go up from there, Not a cost effective venture for most. I found out the hard way by not researching it! Jim
