: Thoughts on Modified Stock
jdjanda 03-13-2002, 12:58 PM I'm considering competing at the Reno CalRocs event in Modified Stock. For those that we're there, or even better those that competed, I'd like to throw out a few questions:
What was your overall impression of the Modified Stock class?
Was it worth the effort, and did you learn anything?
Was it your first time competing in this type of event?
Did the rules level the playing field?
Would you compete again, or step up to a higher class?
Any other thoughts or comments
Scout Dude 03-13-2002, 01:28 PM Hey Joe,
I would have to say that it was much tamer than the courses set at Amador. Fridays courses were tough but you had to work hard to roll-over on most of them. The courses for the finals though were a little bit tougher. I say go for it though. PM me with your number again if you want more details.

Whitewater 03-13-2002, 02:04 PM I personally thought the Modified was the funnest class to watch. It was the biggest class and had a wider range of vehicles than the other two classes. I think the Unlimiteds would be just as much fun if only we could get more people to compete in it. Just FYI I didn't compete but saw rigs of all makes and varying mods do equally as well in the Mod class. The courses were varied and no particular type vehicle dominated.
Another observation I had was that on Sunday the Pro Modifieds and Unlimiteds ran the same courses. I was surprised to see that on every single course the modifieds combined scores were significantly lower than were the Unlimiteds. I'm not exactly sure how to explain this

I would say that it's because the unlimited class started first. The course was more beat down (and doable) by the time the pro mods got to it.

i was there competing in pro mod. fatkid and bender (fellow club members ) were competing in the stock class.
my personel thought on the class are that it is like fat chicks and mopeds. fun to ride but you don't want your friends to see you and laugh. ok just kidding. if that is the state of build up your rig is in then run it.
yes to all your questions

Yep, The advantage actually went to the Unlimiteds as far as that goes.
Rubicrawler 03-13-2002, 05:33 PM Joe- count me in for pit crew duty!!:skull:
FRAMETWISTER 03-13-2002, 07:56 PM If you don't have to drive it to work on monday, go for the Pro Modified it looks like a lot more fun. The Modified Stock class had alot a great drivers out there, Kevin Hawkins (Curries "rocky road"), Ron Kirby(Pirates), Kathy Crook(had a graet save),Fatkid (Fully getting it), Cody Waggoner, and Cameron Snow. I would mention us ,but we lost are front drive shaft and DNF. I believe that class will grow.
what classifies as a modified stock wheeler? What can you and
cannot do?

You guys were fun to watch. It's not like you gave up, it's just sometimes the carnage gods want their sacrifices and they want them now.

Tin Bender 03-13-2002, 09:34 PM It was a great time.....
I do think however that "cut'n brakes" should NOT be allow'd.
The class is ment to give everyone an even play'n field, and the use of an ATLAS+ cut'n brakes made it about as "even as me box'n with George Forman......:skull:
fatkid 03-13-2002, 09:44 PM I think it was a blast, see at Reno.:skull:
Wilson 03-13-2002, 10:03 PM I'm building a sami for my room mate that I'm going to try to keep within the limitations for the stock mod class. I'll probably be building my own comp rig next fall, but it will more than likely be a buggy for the promod class. I say run what you brought. That was something that was brought up last weekend. Walker Evans pinned the rear steering up on his truck to run the pro mod, which had 27 or so entrants. The unlimited only had seven. Run your rig in whatever class it fits in. If it's your first comp and can, run the lower class, you can always move up, unless you are going to run the whole series and want to keep your running points for the championship. My $.02

Joel told me about the cutting brakes on the Currie rig, WTF!!
I agree 100% no cutting brakes in the mod stock, partly because I don't feel like install one :D
FRAMETWISTER 03-14-2002, 09:55 AM Next time there will be 10 rigs out there with atlas + cutting brakes becauses they let them use them this time and he won the class and did it smooth. It must be nice to drive somebody jeep that has an unlimted amount of money and put in a stock class for the starting wheeler. We will be at Reno and ready to try it again. " Beware Carnage Gods" we will be back.

Gimme a fawkin break.....
Line Lock (or FREE if you have an E-Brake) = $35
Twin Stick for Dana 300 = $100 from Currie, or FREE if home fabbed
Total = $135 for "cutting brakes".
Quit fawkin whining, and put them on your rig.
Dychen 03-14-2002, 01:07 PM but don't you have to have an ARB in the back for cutting breaks to work currectly

No one's whining, I just don't feel cutting brakes are in the spirit of Modified Stock. You can't tube the fenders but you can run a cutting break. :p
What type of turning brake are you using singe or twin stick?

Hell yeah :skull:
dog walker 03-14-2002, 07:08 PM Cutting breaks or not, all you need is a good driver. Besides, if you cant drive well enough to use the breaks, then they wont help you out a bit. Everyone wants to be a hero, but listen to me now and hear me later, the stock mod class may ride in the "yellow bus" on the way to the comps, but it's not as easy as you all think. I hope the class does get bigger, cause that means more prize money for the top drivers!
Hey Lance, Call me ASAP!!!!! Very Important........(916)727-6496
