I am putting my rear third member back in 76 fj40 and the haynes manual says torque on differential carrier bearing caps to be 35lbft. seem a little low to me . The torque spec on the diff plug is 58ftlbs.

Is 35lbft right....I'm thinkin thats a little low..
Thanks

standing by with my torque wrench in hand!!!

thanks a ton

If you are putting the 3rd back in you are reading the wrong torque spec. Carrier Bearing caps are not the studs on your axle which hold the diff in place after you put on the nuts. Is that what you want? Also I have never used a torque wrench when installing the diff plugs. That spec. sounds high.

If you do want the spec on the nuts which hold the 3rd member to the axle I just hand tighten mine to umf tight.

Ok, let me clarify
.... I do not torque diff plugs either.. I used it as an example .

The four 17mm bolts that hold the carrier in place ( two on each side) I need that torque spec. They are already umf tight but there has to be a torque spec....right?

thanks again..

My recollection is that they are 70 ft-lbs, but I am at work and don't have my manual in front of me.

I did a search on LCML and couldn't find it either. Anyone else feel free to chime in here!

I'm home now and the Toyota manual says 66 - 79 ft lbs.
