I'm coming off a yz400f that was lacking the low end I wanted..

I am tring to keep the budget between 2k-2.5k, but will make an exception if the crf is reasonably priced. Looking at 96-02 ( green sticker)
I'm riding in pretty open areas with some hill climbs and like having power within a flick of the wrist. Will a 450 pick up were my heavy and weak 400 left off? I may end up going to cr route, but justify a crf to me.

how bout a cr 500, got 2 to choose from and am ready to negotiate since i need to produce some cash flow now.
got a 2001 green stickered cr500 , was asking 4k but might be willing to drop to around 3500.00 if someone wanted to buy.
also got a 1990 cr500 for around 1500.00. kinda wouldn't mind keeping that though.... but like I said ready to sell something... I just bought another and need to sell one

I'd go with the Cr500....2 stroke top end and they will grunt down low like a 4 stroke. No brainer

X2 for the CR500

Once you ride one you'll realize there very easy to ride and there about as realiable as a hammer........

And Carnige with anything less just SUCKS :D

Get that 2001 CR500, you will not regreat it......... you can always put the CR500 motor into a CRF450 frame later and have the BEST bike ever!!

Those 2 statements make me think the 2 stroke would fill the requirement you are looking for.. I have had all kinds of bikes and 4 wheelers and there is nothing like the throttle response of a 2 stroke.. The 500 that was mentioned is a good bike and you will probably never reach top speed many times just because of the power that thing makes..

Here is how I base my bike buying decisions.. If you're going on long steady speed trail rides then get a 4 stroke.. If you want instant throttle response and are going out to romp at the sand pits or track then get a 2 stroke..

I just went from 250F to a 02 CR250
could not be happier after a 14oz flywheel weight

if you want a green sticker 450, I don't think they had those in 02, I think 1st ones were in 03? Not sure.
get the 500 if you do much open riding:D
you can always pop it in a late 02 down aluminum framed 250:) then you get a CR500AF:smokin:

I found a nice sounding 02' 450 for supposedly 3k obo(craigslist), but it ended up being 3k firm. Still an awsome price, but I can't justify it. I'm keeping my budget at 2.5k and less.

I'm waiting for a reply on a 99' cr 250, but my first choice is going to be 96-02 cr250's.

i just gave my 03 250f away at $2,900, killed me to do it :shaking:

it's not to much motor, you hardly use it's potential during normal riding, practicaly never have to rebuild it cuz yer not going to be tacking the engine out all the time, makes you lazy a little if anything.... don't have to shift :grinpimp: , plus it's a big bore so that low end lug that everyone likes bout hill climbing with 4-strokes is there in the 500. BTW I have beat crf450's in the sand and hillclimbs hands down with my cr500's. ( track riding is a little more work.. the bike will do it but the rider gets pretty damn tired) if you put the motor in a 02 250 frame you'll have the ultimate.... those cr500af bikes are the best of both worlds.
if cost is an issue buy the 1990, you'll have money left over for fun mods and ugrades and the thing will probably never be worth less than 1200.00 bucks. so you can resale it anytime and not lose. :)

The guy replied back to me on the 99' cr and from his message it seems like a pretty cool deal. Its got a bunch of extra parts to convert from trail/motocross to a long distance/desert type setup. I'll check it out.

Glad you finally got rid of your yzf it been awhile. :D

Like I said in the post above I have a line on a 250 and will see how that pans out, otherwise, I might try that 500 out as it sounds like the best of both worlds. It's just the idea everyone has that its so powerfull and alot to handle. That and I know I'll try and tach the fucker out all the time. :D
