The November issue of 4-wheel Drive has started a buildup of a Scout on page 76. I'm shocked ~ I had to email the editor (kevin.mcnulty@primedia.com) to thank him ~ and suggest ya'll do the same. I'm going to re-new my subscription with this mag JUST for the exposure ~ and suggest ya'll do the same.

I've also offered any help I could provide professionally and product-ly.

Just thougth I'd say something.

I wish the mags would just leave us alone. The less people that like Scouts the better.

Cool. I'll have to check that out....

I think what he means by that is if people don't like the Scouts, then that's more parts for those who do.

Kinda like a Jeep......who doesn't know someone who owns one w/ a 3 " lift, bead locks, and brush guard, winch, and 33's or 35's and never takes it off road? And as long as street queens are buying the good stuff, and not even using it once, that keeps the price higher for those who actually know how to use it.

Don't belive me, just drive through a local high school parking lot.......

While I am glad to see Scouts in the mags, I kinda have to agree with those on the mags leaving Scouts alone. I'd hate to see Scout parts priced like EB stuff.

Yeah because Scouts are gonna become as popular as Jeeps overnight

Amen to that, brother! I have 2 EB's, and if I didn't shop right for parts or get lucky, I'll be paying top dollar for what is essentially early / late mustang and F-100 / 150 parts. Put EB in front of any F*rd part on eBay and stand back! I once toyed with the notion of parting out EB's, but the junk prices put an end to that. Now, I deal with the unaware and projects that never made it. :smokin:

Well I don't mind scouts being in the mags because I don't think that these kind of people are willing to hunt backyard feilds to find one...I mean we all flip through these mags from time to time but we don't live by them. The kind of people who do read these mags want something cool (mainstream) like a jeep not a cornbinder.

Plus I don't worry about Scout prices going up cuz 90% of us don't have many Scout parts left on our rigs as it is :flipoff2:

Whats wrong with the engine rebuild, only a couple months after my 392 rebuild. I now forgot that I didn't get a "new timing chain and cover"

I'm looking forward to the AFI installation in an upcoming issue

Scout parts are still cheap, luckily. My Daughter just pulled for me up in Denver at Pullnsave, 2 perfect front fenders, the exterior lights, ashtray and speedo all for only $53.00. :smokin:

If I had known you needed and ashtray, I would have given you one.

Even if it wasn't a good deal it would still be cool to say your daughter pulled parts for you at the PNP. :D Sounds like you raised her right.

This is quite the BB type of discussion. The only thing really IH left on my "bought" rig is the body...

Other than that I go shopping in every other aisle for what works...

I like all things International so bring it.

True, but then every one with a rusty pile in their backyard will want a fortune for it. My local parts guy knows a guy who has a rusted out truck SOA'd and a pile of parts, but the guy wants $5000 for the whole lot, and no he won't part it.

I mean we all flip through these mags from time to time but we don't live by them. The kind of people who do read these mags want something cool (mainstream) like a jeep not a cornbinder. I gave up on the mags when I found Pirate. There really isn't much tech that applies to Scouts anyway.

Surprised it took so long for someone to say something ;)

I bought that mag, it's actually pretty good. I haven't bought one in quite a while - things have changed..

As for Scout stuff going up - actually it would mean more incentive for aftermarket stuff which is a good thing.

I would rather make my own parts then just buy them and bolt them on.

That will be a first, bolt on parts. Over the years of buying car parts when it says bolt on, that means you need to own a cutting torch and a welder :D There always seems to be some hang-up. I am all for making items, but some items are better bought. I would like to at least see IH listed as a vehicle option Not just GM, Ford, Jeep, and Zuk.

As for the mag article, I think it's great. A lot better than peterson4wd last mentioning about the Scout axle ( rated worst ) They picked some obscure ford axle made for only a couple years as the best axle. I don't see any IH's at the local PNP. I have bought several "backyard rescue” So I have lots of spare parts, now I just need to get one built up. I needed a fender, endup buy the whole car for $200 bucks, needed a good engine, bought the whole car for $350 bucks. My wife is about to kill me for bring home black widow infested POS, but I am having fun. :flipoff2:

I want to see more articles in every mag!
I want to see TV shows talking about how rare and great scouts are!
I want scout prices to sky rocket!
I want to see the IH market mirror the real estate market!
I want 20k of instant equity in my scout!

I say RAISE THE PRICES!

Wanna by my scout?

I was always that way, when I had spare time..

Not that I have money but these past few years on the rubycon there have been a lot of bolt on TJ's that are VERY impressive!

Bolt on is only crap if it is.. crap. Old stuff like smittybilt nerfs etc is.. crap but if there are more people making quality stuff - competetion is a good thing sometimes.

I'll be buying my roll cage most likely, so if more people sell a "kit" that's all the betta fo me!

And with no press at all, we'll have about as many options for our rigs as the guys with Studebakers have. We're already not too far off from that.

Scout's aren't going to become the next FJ40 overnight.

And if they do, big deal. I'll get to laugh twice as hard as I tell stories about cutting them up, or trashing them on the trail in the "old days when people paid you to take their Scouts."

I pick up the mag to see what they had to say. Quote “Scout buildup? We’re kidding you, right? Not in the least." Will have to see what next month issue brings as this month was limited to "Bringing an IH Scout 392 back to life"
They cheated a bit, by having a professional engine re-builder go through the block. Not what you normally think of when somebody says bring an IH engine back to life. (Starting fluid and fresh gas)

Urban Wheeler
10-01-2005, 02:45 PM
I bet all it really needed was fresh gas and oil.

Bindernut
10-01-2005, 04:47 PM
Of course that's all it needed! But that wouldn't serve the purpose of the magazine, which is, from what I am able to tell, just to convince every ignorant dummy who wants to be a tough guy and drive a big 4wd that he needs to spend his wads of cash with any (or all) of the vendors and advertisers within the magazine. It would accomplish absolutely nothing towards that end to run an article showing that an old Scout can be made to wheel well without all the BLING sold in the magazines. This should be no surprise to any of us here! :shaking:

I donno, but I was a little disapointed with the lack of detail to the heads and stuff. Seemed that they made a big deal about checking for cracks, then they reassembled it.
