View Full Version : Transfercase
I have a TH700R4 tranny and I'm trying to find a flexable transfercase/gearing options..
I would like to have the ability to have a 1:1 ratio for highway speeds / long road trips. a 1.3:1 or there abouts for daily driving & around town type stuff where my max speed would need to be about 40-45 tops.. and then a low gear 4:1 for offroad stuff..
it would be nice to have a 2:1 & then a even lower 6:1 (with four gearing options total but 3 would be suffecient)
so either a 1:1, 1.3:1, 4:1
or a 1:1, 1.3:1, 2:1, 6:1 type setup (roughly)?
P.S. keep in mind I need the actualy 2wd/4wd ability of a transfercase...
Thanks..

gosh. how long is your rig and how much money do you have?
for the 700r tranny you could put a overdrive/underdrive unit on it, or you could run a 6 speed stick for a higher gear, but still power in town
for the t-case you could run a doubler. or have you thought about the new atlas coming out? i heard it will have multiple low range selections. (but that was just from a drunk guy in a rail at tellico)
the shortest way would be a 6 speed stick with the new atlas. the other combos could get silly in length, but could get the job done.

Well its a 118" wheel base, and I have money, but I don't have loads of cash to dump into an atlas. (I don't think. How much does one run?)
As far as length goes I don't realy care how far back the entire conglomeration reaches as long as I can still shift it without reaching into the back of the rig.. I would like all the shifters to be all right together..

If you've already got the 700r4, I would go to a dana 300 tcase. The adapter is a couple hundred. It comes standard with 2.62:1 low range, and 4:1 doesn't cost a whole lot more.
But how can I obtain multiple gear ratio's to work with?

You're question is just too broad. Like T. Rockhumper said, it just depends on how much length you have to work with. If you think about it....
With the 700r4/stock dana 300 combo you've got...
3.06, 1.61, 1.00, .70
x
1.00hi - 2.72low ---- or 1.00hi - 4.00low
Which is eight different ratios to work with.
If you had the extra 6.5 inches, then you could add a KluneV in there, and have 16 different ratios.
How many more ratios do you really need? Stak has a 3 spd tcase coming out, and AA has a 4 speed Atlas not too far away either.
Basicly I'm just looking for a way to have a couple different gear ranges to run in... to make the rig more flexable.
And aprently the people at the Stak company agree. here's what they said,
"I was frustrated about not wanting to build a single purpose rig, and decided a multi-speed t-case was a good solution."
