Well, my diesel and tow rig withdrawl has started to get the better of me,(still kicking myself for selling my 00 F250... Amazing the stupid shit you do when there's a woman involved....) especally since we got an 05 F350 at work.
Anyhow, the truck I'm looking at now Truck is an XLT ex. cab 4x4 with the off road package 7.3/4R100, power everything, manual shift 4x4, 40/20/40 seat up front. Basicly the only things it doesn't have are factory fogs, and factory steps.

It's got a nice pushbar on it, with off road lights, tube steps, 80 gallon in bed aux. fuel tank, 5th wheel setup, 5'er tailgate and the stock one, has a mild tow chip, 4" turbo back exhaust, and a few other things.
The owner used it to pull his 32 foot 5th wheel(only 3 times before he got sick) and for summer road trips without the trailer. It's never seen winter, is extremely clean, non smoker, and, has 32K miles, still has the factory tires on it, which show no evidence of abuse.
Maintenance records show oil changes every 3K miles, fuel filters every 6.
It comes with all the factory parts that were replaced, along with the aftermarket stuff, and the boxes and manuals for everything.
I'd rate it as about a 9 out of 10, the aftermarket steps are showing some rust, and there are some small scratches in the bedsides that are most likley from a belt buckle. It rides and drives beautifully, and I'm comparing that to a 1100 mile 05 F350.
Asking price is about $23K USD
I can't find anything remotely close mileage wise to compare the price to, but, that might get me an 03 or 04 with at least double the mileage locally(well, within a 4 hour radius) and, I'm finding 01 and 02's going for about 17-19K with 75K + mileage. And that price will let me choose from about 4 or 5 Cummins trucks around that year with at least 110K on them... I'd wanted to at least look at a Cummins truck, but, anything remotely affordable has a ton of miles on it, heck, one guy is trying to get $13,000 for a first gen with 245,000 on it...

What do you guys think? I'm thinking that I'm going to loose sleep over this one if I don't buy it. But, at the same time, I don't really want to push a real hard bargan, as I'm dealing with the guy's widow, might try and talk her down some, but, she is pretty set on her price.

I wouldn't buy it. The price isn't all that great. Think about this:

I bought a '01 F350 dually crew cab 4x4 Larit, 7.3L, stick, longbed LARIAT for 26K in february of this year.

That extra-cab is nice but the crewcab is a lot nicer.

The auto tranny in '00 thru '03 (w/ the 7.3) is not the most reliable of units. I trust the stick in my f350 a lot more than the auto. Especially since my neighbor's 01 F250 spit out its auto after only 37k with very light towing (and Ford wouldn't replace it under warranty...)

Keep looking, you can find better.

The truck looks real nice, the price is high for my area. Its up to you if it is worth the extra $$$. Sounds like it should be very reliable considering it was over maintained, and low mileage. I just got a nice 00 F350 PSD RC LWB 4x4 with 8" western plow and a salter for $14k it has 130k miles on it. Do not worry about the 4R100 it is much improved over the E4OD. I truck pull and drag race my 4R100 and all it has is a big cooler, semi-synthetic fluid, and the tri-cumulator springs/valve in it. It has plowed commercially every winter since it was new, no issues at all with it. If I had to choose between a 6.0 or a 7.3 PSD I would get the 7.3.

Just so you know, a Cummins with 150K+ is just getting broken in. If the truck itself is in good shape and you know the tranny is good, then I would still shoot for that. Of course, I'm a bit biased :D

Sounds like a good deal to me, I'd take a 00 7.3 over a newer 6.0 any day. IMO the price is in line with the milage and condition.

Decent price compared to the '03 dmax we had at work with 30k on it and they wanted 29 grand for it. It was in nice shape and had new 285 bfg at's, hard tonnou cover, vent visors, nerf bars and some other minor stuff that really means nothing but the dealer i work at thinks it does and raises the price accordingly.

I picked this one up back in April. 200K on it with the Lariat package ( all leather, capt'n seats in front) and a gooseneck setup. It was a work truck of some sort as the bed is pretty beat up, minor scratching on the body in places and a few small dents. I paid $14K for it and think I got a decent deal. You can't beat the cab of a SuperDuty. I don't like riding in anybody else's junk because of how comfortable it is in that thing now. Road trips have become a joy again. I've dumped about $300 worth of performance junk in it and it just makes me grin when the smoke starts rollin'. The tranny doesn't completely concern me, but it is in the back of my head all the time.

I would check the build date on the door tag. If it is July 00 or later, the tranny is marginal. Ford had a bad run of trannys from July 17 2000 to May 2001. They have what is called a mechanical diode instead of the usual sprags. The diode is the cause of the failures. If the build date is before that, buy it. I have 108k on my original tranny pushing 340hp and towing a 35foot 10k pound 5er about 6 times a year.

sounds like a decent deal to me, especially being in canada with the snow and presumably salt. Thats crazy low milage, and i just bought a 99 7.3, stick, with 220K on it and you would never know. Shes got plenty of life left in her man! Maybe try to haggle a bit if you think you can, but its not a bad deal from what i can tell. looks like a very nice rig.
