I've got an FJ40, w/ stock harness, and a 350. I'm running a late model AC/ Delco alternator. This set up has been working fine for years, except the alternator was replaced this year. The former alternator was the same, not the stock Toyota alternator, so nothing has really changed. I know that you really aren't supposed to run a stock harness w/ a h.o. alternator, but this has not been a problem in the 20+ years since we put the 350 in.

Here's the problem: One day a couple of weeks ago I lost all of my side markers and tail lights, dash lights, and hazards. Still got turn signals, brake lights, head lamps, and fog lights.

I've been studying the wiring diagrams, and trying to troubleshoot the system, but I'm having a hard time nailing down where the systems I lost bundle together. The fuses are good (first thing I checked), I initially thought the first position of my light switch, but would that also affect the hazards? Is there a relay for the hazards that is tied in to the marker lights and dash lights?

So, if any of you are electrical wizards, this may be pretty easy for you. Any ideas or input would be appreciated, I'm having a 'mare.

Thanks,

G

Depends a little on which year.

The tail, side and dash lights all run off of the headlight switch, but it is a different switch contact than the headlights. The switch is the most likely culprit. The switch is rebuildable. Does the interior light work (if you have one)? If it doesn't then the problem is upstream of the switch at the fuse block.

The hazards are on a separate circuit, so this is probably a separate problem. They use the same fuse as the horn.
Try cleaning all the contacts in the fuse block (disconnect the battery first) and see if that helps as this is a common problem.
