: Anyone seen this in Petersens?
RedBarron 03-14-2002, 01:03 AM I seen an article on "Long leaf springs" it's in this months issue... in about the middle, and there is a pic of a sprung under flatty. I was wanting to get more info on them, because I'm getting ready to spring over my rig, but can't find anything on them any where but there. I know there is a web site at the end of the article but it doesn't work.....any ideas???? :jeep:
KAcrawler 03-14-2002, 06:36 AM not sure if you are looking for a specific brand but try alcan or national spring they will make you anything you want.
Highlander 03-14-2002, 07:56 AM Their site worked for me. I emailed them and the cost was $650 for all four springs.
RoCkSkuLLz 03-14-2002, 12:54 PM just use some cherokee rear leaf packs :D

You can also contact these guys. R & P 4wd (http://www.r-p4wd.com/) (Rich & Paul) for more info if that link isn't working for you. That is Rich's flattie pictured in the article. They will have all the answers for you.
RedBarron 03-14-2002, 05:28 PM Highlander...send me the link because I can't seem to get it to work for me.
66CJdean 03-14-2002, 05:33 PM Dodge Dakota springs here. They flex and are easy to get but you will have to go spring over but I think you said you were.http://www.respite.org/images/cj66dean/myjeep3.jpg

Do the cherokee springs have the same length in the front half of the spring as a cj and 8 to 10 longer in the rear half?
Are they a 1 1/2" wide?
thanks.
66CJdean 03-14-2002, 07:27 PM They are about the same on the front half and about 7" longer on the rear half. They are 2.5" wide
Highlander 03-14-2002, 07:29 PM Thanks 66CJdean:beer:
RedBarron 03-14-2002, 08:18 PM Thanks for the link Highlander....it worked!!!!
Tmartin 03-14-2002, 08:42 PM CJdean: Longer on which end and about the same on ??? Not sure I follow your front and back lingo. We need springs that are about the same distance between the shackle and the centre bolt, and longer at the big end. Are the cherokee springs like that or the other way around?
notcrazyjustNuTz 03-14-2002, 08:50 PM I know the Holbrook Bros. Gary and Ed and also Rich and Paul of R&P pretty well. They are all great folks and always willing to help and answer any questions regarding all aspects of rig builup. I have had the second set of prototype springs Holbrook made under my CJ5 for over a year now. When I went with them I was trying something different and was somewhat apprehensive but figured I could easily go another route in the event I didn't like them, but I'm still happy with them today. They are pretty close to a bolt on deal, the ride is way softer than stock, the flex is very nice, no steering issues, no wheelhop, the driveline angles stay good, I have a low center of gravity, and I think it wheels pretty sweet. I went with some JB style U-Bolt plates to help the under tube clearance. They do not net you a whole lot of lift, however with some more sawzall time I have recently went to 35's. I will have to trim more and get a rockcrawler hood someday when I decide I need bigger tires. This is the only "ramp" photo I have, this was last winter with the 33's. :jeep:

Its longer on which ever side you want it to be, you can mount with either side pointed either direction.
RedBarron 03-15-2002, 12:45 AM notjustcrazyjustnutz..... Since you know both of them... why did you choose to go through these guys verse the junk yard. It sounds like a kick ass set up and I'm thinking pretty strongly about getting it...but after hearing about other options why are their setups sooooo much?
notcrazyjustNuTz 03-15-2002, 09:21 AM I was out on a run with Garys club while still running stiff ass standard length SUA lift springs. We got to talking about flex and he told me about the springs they were designing. I was looking at Warn's XCL and some SOA options already. When all is said and done with the XCL I was looking at big big buck$$. I'm not so sure that a well done SOA is going to come in much under $650.00 when all is said and done either??...drivelines, something to cure wheelhop, steering issues, ect... I also like the idea of less lift for center of gravity reasons, that's why god invented sawzalls :D Plus I had yet to read much about setups like 66CJdeans sweet ride, or Lances kickass fatdaddy pig (which at the time was still SOA front and rear) just to name a couple of awesome setups off this board. This is the place to learn about your options for sure. At the time I was looking YJ springs were the SOA ticket and I was seeing some sag and have other issues. Holbrooks setup was damn near a bolt in, having only to move your non-shackel spring mounts (the "kit" comes with new ones to use) and then bolt the springs in, less than half a day's project and it's night and day over stock length SUA springs. I have welding/fab skills and now just as important I have tools and a decent shop to work in that I didn't have then, also alot has happened in the last year plus with suspension design so I don't know what I would do today if considering the option again, tough choice with all the killer setups. Depends on your skills alot, most people including myself can't just throw a SNORT Boys setup under their rig. Then what your gaols are comes into play too; weekend wheeler-daily driver, competition rig, mud or rocks, ect... I took a shot at something different and thankfully don't regret it at all. :smokin:
RedBarron 03-15-2002, 12:32 PM Thanks for all the info about these guys and your
experiances with them. I'm wanting to go with a SOA...keep the sawzall away... and will explore my options but will definetly keep these guys in mind. This maybe a question for the shop but what the hell....do you know how much of a lift they give on a flatty when SOA, or is it even possiable to use them for a SOA?

couldn't help but notice the talk about cherokee springs, (XJ I presume?) here are the specs, (could vary from production)
overall length.......................51 1/2"
front eye to center bolt........23"
center bolt to rear eye.........28 1/2"
free arch..............................4 3/4"-5 1/4"(production variance)
width...................................2 1/2"
size eyes.............................F-1 1/2", R-1 1/2"
average spring rate............@187lbs/inch(production variance)
Hope this helps folks :p :usa:

Tmartin 03-16-2002, 08:06 AM Anyone try this with stock Cherokee springs? They would be pretty flat and not much lift I imagine on the back of a cj. If the cj weighs 1500 lbs at the rear, thats 750 lbs per spring, divide by 187 lbs/inch, means you are left with 3/4 to 1 1/4 arch left in the springs. Hmmm. Just a rough estimate of course. Never weighed the back end of my cj. Are they pretty flat in place on a cherokee?
MOGXJ44 05-29-2002, 06:24 PM Yes, XJ springs are pretty flat. The rear of my XJ weighs 1800 lbs. fully loaded for the trail. The stock springs that are VERY worn have a slight negative arch to them. Probably had a slight positive arch from the factory. 1800/2/187=4.81. This would equal slight positive arch from the factory. Mine are sagged about an inch.
