What do you think? Our high school shop class is going to build a stock class rockcrawling competition TJ and compete in the NEUROC series this spring. After we compete 2 seasons, we will give the Jeep away to the lucky ticket buyer. We hope to raise $ to but a CNC mill.
PS We are starting with a bare frame and body donated by Davey's Jeeps of Salem OH

Hey Teach that is sweet!! I would have dumped those Biology classes to take some more shop classes if we could have built something like that in school.

If you need some help or some direction as far as where to get stuff or what to do, do not heisitate to contact me or Katrina.

I got to make slim jims in shop class. :smokin:

Hey teach, I don't know what resources you have, but I can "point you in the right direction" for cheap/free parts and cheap/free experience in building a Jeep. I'm in Toledo, and a Toolmaker by trade, Jeepbreaker by choice.

Not too many "extreme rockcrawlers" in OH that I know of. But there are ALOT of peeps that know Jeeps and building them up. Some also have alot of stuff "laying around" or would be willing to let go for a good price or possible tax deduction.

Pirate is the place to find all knowledge about rockcrawling vehicles.

Will help any way I can.

That is an awesome project. The things that the kids build in the shops at school there must put the things that get built around here to shame. At my high school I think there would be about 2 people that could/would do work that wouldn't be scary on a trail rig let alone a comp rig.

Want to move your class to portland?

Yes, Davey's Jeeps has literally hundreds of jeeps whole or parts for sale from 1941-present. He has rubicon unlimiteds........ect. 330 692 2125 cell, 330 337 5037 home. remember EST zone. he has really helped our project get started, he donated a 2002 TJ body tub, hood, grille, and a 99 TJ frame. great guy!

This is awesome. It is truely a shame that shop classes are slowly being phased out of the school systems here. The only thing we have at my high school now is a wood working class. Only 1 or 2 other auto tech programs in the school system (Charlotte Meck is a BIG system). Just sad. But it is great to see a teacher with this much passion and just to get on the board and ask questions shows alot. :)

let me get on my soap box here.......you are right! it is a real shame that the shop classes with industrial machinery (most of ours is WWII era) are being closed in favor of the "college is the only option" classes, or the "simulated shop class" on the computer. society (the vocal part) feels that technical training is something for the "bad" kids that cannot function in the classroom and will probably drop out anyway. unfortunately, it is sometimes a dumping ground for those kids. well, i'll take them! most are good kids (a little rebelious) but have some skills hiding below their rough exterior. the biggest problem (and it is getting worse) is lack of parental involvement in their kid's lives. parents have a job to do! it is not always easy, it requires time and consistency. if i can keep a kid on track in my class, then the parents can keep them on track too. the problem is that parent accept bad behavior, no manners, no responsibility, and no effort from their kids. i am really sorry to rant but i see things getting worse and it breaks my heart to see a kid quit school. this project has 3 main goals: keep kids in school, build relationships with business that will hire students, raise money to buy equipment that will mirror what is currently used in industry. this is a hell of a big project but i know that something big is needed to swing things to the positive side for shop classes and their students.

I would've spent less time fuckin around in shop class if we had a kick ass project like that to do.

Thats funny the technical training that I got in high school helped me get the job that I'm making my way through college on.

let me get on my soap box here.

In my experience the "Bad Kids" rebell against the system because they are extremely bored, some are very smart with absolutely no interest in academics...I saw academics as a waste of time and struggling with dyslexia didn't help. My shop classes were something I looked forward to in school, we didn't even do anything cool like this but It wasn't book work!

Keep up the good fight teach, and don't give up on "any" kids because there is a good kid inside every one of them! I was a "so called" bad kid but I graduated with the help of (ONE) dedicated teacher.

When i was in highschool (ten years ago:( ) we built and fielded a drag car. It was a 1968 firebird, and we built the ENTIRE thing. We got tons of support from the community, and i feel we all learned alot more because we were actually interested in the project. I learned how to weld, fabricate (backhalved the car from scratch),assemble and measure engines, etc. We ran in a highschool only series. It is really a shame that they are phasing out shop classes, as in the very near future, there will be a skilled labour shortage, and HS shop class is a factor in this. If you have to wait until college to get into a shop environment, you are already FAR behind. Me and most of the guys i know have been working in shops since before we had our licences. Im 28 and have 14 years experience in various mechanical trades. It is really cool what you have started here, and i wish you the best of luck.

update, we are in the process of straightening the body panels, cleaning and primering the frame, and making list after list of parts needed and companies to contact. as of friday we have Davey's Jeeps on board for the body and frame, 4WD Hardware for a lot of $ in parts, and ROCKCRUSHER will provide us with what we need to build the axles. we have a LONG way to go but we are excited by the support that you and our sponsors are giving. more later...

Wow! Sounds like we are from the same breed. I have found in my travels in Oregon that most of us shop teachers face the same issues.

Sounds like a USA issue to me with parenting etc. I love my kids and that is why I have paid for the last build or two by selling parts. They need to be part of a project that is bigger than a simulation on a screen.

Thanks, ROB

Usually they are extremely smart... But in a different way. All students learn different - some kids have the attention span to sit in a class room and listen to a lecture and read from a book - There are those students that can't sit still - and don't seem to apply themselves so they are black listed by the faculty. Usually these students are bored with lectures and really shine when it comes to hands on...

Cheers to you for helping these kids out

Pics or a link to your website would be great. A thought on the website - maybe use MSN or Yahoo groups. You can post pictures and files - and there is a messgae board. This way everyone can view pics and post messages if you need assistance... Just a thought.

we are very happy to now have: Davey's Jeeps, ITS Tube & Steel, 4WD Hardware, ROCKCRUSHER Diffs, Rossler Performance Transmissions, ARB Airlocker, Hickey Metal Fab, Tom Wood's Custom Driveshaft, PSC Steering, Superior Axle & Gear, all on board!

we are bending the tubing for the cage and tube fenders, machining the axle tubes, and pre assembling.

I will add to this since this was myself in school. I never looked forward to school for the book work I hated it and I would skip and do anything to get out of it. I looked forward to shop class, wood shop was ok but still fun then I got into machine shop, I fawkin loved it our teacher was a very stern but a fair man ( x marine). His class did have alot of fuck up type kids in it but if we screwed up in class the next day we would be in the classroom doing bullshit textbook stuff about machining, he knew we hated it so it kept his classroom in pretty good check. I myself had been in machine shop for my junior and senior year of high school for 2 hours every day, then I also became a teachers helper in my senior year helping out the junior class. The last 6 months of my senior year i was placed into a co-op program that let me work at a real shop half of the school day, which my shop teacher got for me ( he did this with the select group of guys who were advanced in his class), at the end I would say if it were not for my machine shop teacher I would be flippin burgers at the nearest micky-d's. I am now a machinist for a very sucessful nuclear power plant.

Excellent idea, my highschool did not have any kind of shop class. I worked in my home garage to teach myself the basics. Now that I am taking college machine tool and fabrication courses I realize how much i missed out on getting some real instruction. I wish more highschools followed your lead. I'm nobody around here and do more reading and learning than I do posting, but I just have to say that this is very very cool. Your students are a lucky group of kids.

Also, if you are having any problems with funding (although from the looks of things you are not) I would like to suggest a paypal account on the website for people to donate a couple bucks to the cause. And if there is more money than needed for this project, pass it on to the next one. Just a thought, but getting money involved in a worth cause is sometimes a recipe for certain disaster.

Good luck to you and your students

i am looking into offering some new classes. first, i think that students should be exposed to what we do on an introductory level in an elective semester class. we may encourage some students to get into a technical career such as engineering. next, i want to offer a semester class to introduce women to technical careers. i hope to be able to expose high school girls to careers that they have not heard about, or at least help them learn about the mechanical world without feeling like an outsider in a "guys" class.

unfortunately, many schools are closing their "hard" shops either completely or replacing them with simulated modules on the computer

damn dude I wish my school had the balls to do something like that. At my school the only way you can take any kind of technical class is to loose half of your other classes and drive 20 minutes to a technical college. This year I wanted to take a welding class and get my welding certification but since I am "college bound" my parents wouldn't let me drop half my "real" classes. I will probably be in college for a long time and it would be nice to have a well paying technical job like welding to actually support myself in school.

Before I moved to Oklahoma I lived in Minnesota. In 7th grade we had a metal shop class with some pretty hardcore equipment ie plasma cutters, torches, welders, a cnc machine, and cast iron molds. I loved that class and would kill to be able to take one in high school.

That shop is friggin sick dude. Breaks my heart that shop classes are being phazed out. I was reminded of this the other day when I had a sub that was an old shop teacher at the school and apparently from what he was telling me we used to have a sweet auto tech shop but about 6 years ago CMS (Charlotte Meck Schools) decided that all kids should have more "college asperations" as he put it and sold all of the shop equipment and now the shop is being used as...guess what...storage. It just kills me man.

You couldn't be more correct. Kudos for the effort and creativity to get the ball rolling on such an awsome project for those kids. More to the point, this could be a spring board for any students interested in automotive engineering or design. Machining and fab work is not just for the "bad" kids, it is skills that can motivate anyone to be creative and learn.

My HS had a vocational tech section drafting/woodworking/autoshop, but that where the "delinquents" hung out. Then my senior year I needed an extra credit and took drafting...just what I needed! I ended up majoring in Industrial Technology Drafting and Design (basically Vocational Tech!) in college. Thanks to teachers like you!

let me get on my soap box here.......you are right! it is a real shame that the shop classes with industrial machinery (most of ours is WWII era) are being closed in favor of the "college is the only option" classes, or the "simulated shop class" on the computer. society (the vocal part) feels that technical training is something for the "bad" kids that cannot function in the classroom and will probably drop out anyway. unfortunately, it is sometimes a dumping ground for those kids. well, i'll take them! most are good kids (a little rebelious) but have some skills hiding below their rough exterior. the biggest problem (and it is getting worse) is lack of parental involvement in their kid's lives. parents have a job to do! it is not always easy, it requires time and consistency. if i can keep a kid on track in my class, then the parents can keep them on track too. the problem is that parent accept bad behavior, no manners, no responsibility, and no effort from their kids. i am really sorry to rant but i see things getting worse and it breaks my heart to see a kid quit school. this project has 3 main goals: keep kids in school, build relationships with business that will hire students, raise money to buy equipment that will mirror what is currently used in industry. this is a hell of a big project but i know that something big is needed to swing things to the positive side for shop classes and their students.

I know exactly what you mean. My dad was an automotive shop teacher at Waco High in Waco, Tx. Basically its where they end up putting all the kids that get kicked out of the other classes. I stayed with him for a few weeks while on leave from the military and some of these kids have real talent. I guess it just takes the right teacher and class for them to show it. He told me about one kid who did his report on how to hotwire a car (of all things). We had shop in my little hick town in Az but it was welding. I wish all schools had auto shop though. Good luck with your project Teach.

Great build I can' wait to see how it turns out. The high school I went to most of us knew more than the guy teaching the program. It got to the point that he finally seperated us into two groups those who had been working on machinery most of our young lives and were bored, and those, that were stuck there to get them out of the way.

It helps if the teacher knows what he is doing and has a love for it. The local HS decided to reopen the auto shop after years of not having it. Unfortunately the guy they hired didn't know what he was doing. He broke studs off one girls PU trying to tighten them up so the wheel was straight, when clearly the problem was thew ball joint was gone. The pity of it was the local hotrodders and 4X4 guys had been discussing donating time and equipment to help the program out. After this incident and a couple of others where help was offered and turned down because the people offering to help hadn't gone to school like he had, we just let it die again. It is back the way it was before the kids who are interested searching out those who are willing to pass on their knowledge.

I think it's awesome that you are making a goal for them and giving them a project that will actually become something to be proud of. My first highschool had a great auto/body shop, however, the most of the projects were busted students cars that needed stuff fixed. They did get into the engine with replacing parts, no machine or fab work, though. They did some *OK* paint and body work, but they learned nothing of customizing. Mostly just replaced pannels and pulled dents and slapped bondo and used the paint booth.

The second highschool I went to had a crap program and shop (it was a yuppie school). They spent the year making half a car run. It was a frontwheel drive citation that was cut in half. They ended up putting castors on it so they could back up. That class was a place for the fuck-ups to waste their time.

Kudos! It's great seeing the progress pictures.

We had 4 different shop teachers in 1 semester. We couldn't work if there wasn't a real teacher. So we mainly just watched movies while a substitute was there.

In my shop class we took apart lawn mower engines, tractor engines, cut plate with a torch, and welded junk to more junk. But mostly we goofed off. If we had a shop like THAT, maybe I'd have worked a little harder. At least it got me a basis in welding.

Looking forward to the progress.

Wow, props to you for taking those guys under your wing. I wish our shop class was like that, not that it would have mattered much for me, i'm on the road to med school. but i'll bet ya if we had a shop like that, i would have done it. Its great to see a lot of the parts being donated. How much $ do you think you have in it? in high school, our shop teacher taught with his J20, but i think it was crap like changing the oil and stuff, def not building a rock crawler. at least it was a jeep. Congrats on the project, cant wait to see it finished.

Keep the updates coming. I was paid my Junior and Senior year to work in my High School shop because I had to many T/A units and he couldnt operate w/out me. I think that I might head back to the high school and see if I could start an operation like this. We have no where near the amount of space as you guys but bigger problems have been overcome.

I spotted for Matt and we competed in the first Uroc Pro Atlantic event a couple of weekends ago in Jellico, TN. We finnished in 6th place and did make it to the finals where we scored a -2 out of 40. Here are some pics of us in action and our good friend TJmagoo turning turtle.

Matt and J congrats on the year! I think you did a great thing with the shop class. Wish I had the chance to be a part of something like this in HS. I could tell the the project made a huge impact on 2 students who made it to several events and always jumped in to lend a hand during the comps. Talking to these students and the parent I could feel the pride that they had in the project and the knowledge they received. Thanks for taking the initiative to try and change a few lives, you did a good job. Debs and I will be buying several tickets to help out the cause.

I hope the sales are going well. i intend to buy some tickets later when i'm not at work:laughing:. I graduated high school not even 3 years ago and i'm learning in college what your kids are getting in high school. I'm jealous. Your shop is nice too. Might be nicer than my college shop. We don't have a horizontal mill, but we do have an old bridgeport cnc (one of the old school ones that looks like a regular mill with a computer slapped on it. it has a whole 128kbytes of on board storage) and a couple modern cncs that fit on a desktop (4x6x4 travel i think).

My senior year they opened a new high school and autoshop and woodshop were gone. had to take 3 periods a day to go to a vocational tech school 30 minutes away. But there was woodshop, autoshop, autobody, and welding (no machine shop:( )

KEEP IT UP TEACH!
