I'm a complete newb to cycles. But I've been looking at finding an old Enduro to tinker around on and get around town (gas prices killing me). I really can't look at anything over 1000 bucks. What are some suggestions as to models, prices?

i would go with a 4 stroke. find a honda xr350/400 in good shape. that's probably your best bet. suzuki dr350's and yamaha xt350's are also nice bikes. you should easily be able to score one under a grand. parts are still pretty much readily available for all.

If you're not going to be jumping very high, you could get one of those chinese dual sports off ebay. I see them going for $549 buy it now. I've heard good things as far as reliability goes, they're just not full motocross bikes. I think the gas prices are really bringing up the dual sport prices. It's ridiculous. A decent drz or xr will run you $2500 or more unless you get lucky. I'm going to sell my father in law's gs500 and get him a dual sport soon. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the replies. I'm definately looking at a 4-stroke, I'm not even going to try to touch a 2-stroke for street use. Cops get awefully pissy about noise control down here. Plus I would prefer the reliability. Not looking at getting much more than a 250/350, anything else would be overkill for me.
