: What tires are you running?
bigjeepinYJ 09-27-2005, 10:32 AM Well...
I just purchased a Unimog 1962 404 from the Classified Section
It needs some new tires...
I was wondering what type of tires you all are running on stock wheels. I am going to keep this thing stock for over the winter. Then I am going to work on getting it fixed up.
Havent seen a post in the Mog Forum about tires.

texascadillac42 09-27-2005, 04:19 PM I run 12.5R20 (41") Michelin XLs as well. They have been a good tire for the general wheeling that I do. Airing them way down seems to help a fair amount on the rocks in terms of stiffness. Ive thought about grooving the tires some more, but just havent gotten around to it.
Discosaurus 09-27-2005, 04:44 PM Conti MPT80 or MPT81's !
Puffdragon 09-27-2005, 05:49 PM swamper Iroks or pro comp X terrains. They are far cheaper that the above tyres, and run down the road real nice, plus you can replace them easily if you have a crapped out tyre.
dukguy 09-27-2005, 11:03 PM The XL's are made for huge heavy military trucks. So they are very heavy and don't flex. The only good thing about them is you can buy them cheap b/c they are military surplus. They are frequently old and that can cause the side walls to suck. If you really want to wheel 39.5x20 Iroks. They are 8 ply, soft rubber and they work really well in alot of terrains. Personally I'm gettting 17" beadlocks and going with the 42's :flipoff2: .

Swamper IROK 41x14.5R20
$341
Nat Tire & Wheel - in stock
Swamper IROK 39.5x13.5R20
$321
Nat Tire & Wheel - in stock
Conti MPT80 12.5x20
$326
Exped Imports - in stock
Conti MPT81 335/80x20

BTW - the Conti's aren't like the XL's - they are true MPT (multi-purpose-terrain) low pressure tires. The XL's flex like train car wheels.
bigjeepinYJ 09-28-2005, 08:10 AM Thanks for the replies guys. I would like to get something like the IROKS.... Wasnt looking to spend that much but... I will if that is what works good.
Anyone have some pics of Mogs with the IROCKS... I would most likely go with the 41's since I dont do much with on the rocks.
Puffdragon 09-28-2005, 08:29 PM wholey hell batman, you quoting radials there. You will want the Irok Bias, they can run 70MPH with no balance and no vibes. I have two mogs with Irok Bias 39 13.5 R20's and i pay no where near what your getting quoted. I get mine wholesale for less than $200 per tire, and sell them for Around $250 per tire.
shawnmog 10-11-2005, 07:09 AM I just bought a 75 416 mog, and I found 5 52" michelines for a great price. Will they fit?Or will they rub? Appreciate the help!!
Discosaurus 10-11-2005, 08:36 AM They will rub big time unless they're real narrow. 46" tall x 15" wide are about as big as you can go without mods - even they will rub on *some* trucks.
I think there was at least one special ag wheel with pretty much zero backspacing that might allow a wider tire in there - but maybe that was a 24" rim...

Expedition Imports (http://www.expedition-imports.com) recently built a Mog with the new 41" radial Iroks, the pictures of which you can see here (http://www.expedition-imports.com/404_0_custom.htm). Here's one photo:

Update: I just went by Expedition Imports today to ask the owner of the truck what his impression was of the Iroks. Unfortunately, it wasn't favorable. Although they're great off-road, they found that after only 440 highway/trail miles, the tires were over 1/4 worn out! They'd even spoken to Interco about the problem. These tires are just too soft a rubber compound to be used at highway speed under the weight of a truck like the Mog. You could actually see how the rubber was literally melting off the tread blocks. They've gone back to the 365/80-20 Continentals (about 43 inches tall) which were made for the Mog and which perform awesome both on road and off. If you want more info, go ahead and give Scott at Expedition a call, 707-643-6757. I included a picture of the Continental they're happy with, from this page (http://expeditionimports.zoovy.com/category/aftermarket/).

Discosaurus 10-13-2005, 05:51 AM Yep - those are MPT80's, which is what I run. They're great road tires, work really well in soft wetness (but not as well as XM47's) and work pretty well (probably not as well as the sticky Iroks) on rock IF you run them real soft.
The MPT81's are even better on road but don't have the big shoulder blocks so aren't as good off.

Yeah, I have a buddy who has the 39.5 Iroks (bias-ply I think) and he is very disappointed with their on-road wear. Off-road they are a great tire. I have had a set of the Conti MPT-81s (335/80~41") on my 404 and I have no complaints, on or off-road!
88Montero 10-13-2005, 08:12 AM I run 12.5 R20 XL and have only had one problem. I have had to use some bead sealer on 2 of the tires. With the swampy mud down here they flex fine for what I need them for. For $25 bucks a tire they were a great deal. I even included them with the mog I just sold. They work for what I need.... Maybe not what you need.

bigjeepinYJ 10-18-2005, 08:30 AM Where would I get a pair of the 365/80-20 Continentals??? I am in need of some winter tread for sure for this thing and would like to get something ordered up.

singham 10-20-2005, 06:51 AM Hi Guys,
The Expedition Imports truck pictured weighs in at about 7800 lbs. Indeed with less than 500 miles we had lost close to 25% of our tread depth. You could actually see the tire melting.
What was extremely telling to us was the fact that when we called warranty support the response was that they would send a truck by and issue a full refund. (Pleased with the companies responsiveness.) However, I truly had been expecting them to tell us that we had a defective batch and they would replace them with another set. Nope....no offer....as if they were well aware that with the weight of the vehicle this was Normal wear. 2000 miles out of a set of Iroks just does not cut it for our customer base. If your truck spends most of the time trailored to the trail, or off-road you will be fine. On-road and you will be breaking the bank. Just my .02
Cheers,
Scott
Puffdragon 10-20-2005, 09:11 AM Well, I have run iroks on several vehicles, and currently run them on my daily driver doka. They run fine. I have more than 2000miles on them, and they are still wearing well. They also do not chunk like all the mil tires do. Iroks have had a problem, that swamper has not yet figured out. And they dont want to tell the consumer. Their are alot of green tires on the market that they cannot find fault in, but are green. I had a set that peeled the top 1/8" off in a matter of seconds on granite rock. Swamper tried to figure it out, but could not, but replaced the tires. The set they replaced them with we checked to make sure the build dates were different than the previuos. If you have an Irock that starts with 404, you might want to have them replaced. Iroks will not wear like the rock hard michelins etc, but they are far superior in offroad situations with no doubt. Expect about 20,000-25,000 per set.
Are your Iroks quiet on the road?I only drove mine once on the highway before making it a off-road only vehicle but the Iroks were so quiet I thought that there was something wrong with the Mog.
Puffdragon 10-20-2005, 05:07 PM compared to traditional mog tires, yes. They are really quiet.
