If you want to spend that much get an 8274, if you want to save money get an x8000. I don't see any reason to spend $300 for the 9500 over the 8000 unless you're too heavy. The 8274 is hands down better than the two though if you can mount it okay.

That, and you can give the 8274 to your grandchildren someday.

the 8274 or 9500? ive seen the 8274's do that

We have a HS9500i on my '85 CJ7, and Rick has an old 8274 on his '79 CJ7. If I was to buy new again, I'd buy the 8274 from Advanced Auto for the $864 - hands down. The 8274 is very fast, the 9500 is very fast, too but it can be too fast and you have to really watch winding it in. Plus the 8274 has thicker rope, and more of it - 150' vs. 125' (or at least that is a difference on the two we have). Don't get me wrong, I love my 9500, no problems with it.

Tell ya what Steff, come up here to Zelie to our house and we can do a winch off between the two jeeps and you can decide for yourself! :D Just bring some

I love my 9500i. Its fast under load, but the brake isnt up to par, it reels in a good 5-8ft after you let off the remote. 8274 kick ass, but they are bulky. Go for the 9500i i hear the new models have a better brake. I have had mine for 8 months with no problems. Feels like it will pull a house down. Good Luck. If you get it from Clemson you should have it in 3-4 days form GA to PA.

I didnt know you could mount a winch on a John Deer, without it being a PTO!

I ordered an x8000i from Clemson on a Thursday. Monday morning it was at the door :D

LINE SPEED..... repeat it 10 times. LINE speed. For wheeling it's a BIG plus. the HS9500 and 8274 are the fastest on the market. When your stuck often after a short tug the truck will get unstuck and be able to travel on it's own but the winch can't keep up and you have to stop again so you don't run over or birds nest the cable. Having a winch that can real in unloaded at 75fpm is a big deal. I also don't care that they say a 8274 is only rated 8k. I have seen a 8274 out pull a Mile marker several times. the MM is rated 10.5k
If you can't afford a 8274 then go for the HS9500. You can get them in the mid 7's if you look.

I love my 8274-50. I just wish it wasn't so big. I have only had one problem with the 8274. I fried the motor and that was my own dumb fault. I didn't stop to let the winch cool when it started to get hot. I bought a new motor from a starter shop and it's all good.

I may try a 9500 on the new buggy. (I have a long time before I need to worry about a winch for the buggy):D

So with that said
go with the 8274

8274.
No question.

Gotta love the spur gears - so simple you can strip and rebuild yourself.

Also love not having the brake, or anything else, in the drum.

Less heat buildup in drum, better for the newer UHMWPE (plasma) winch ropes.

Also like the bigger drum...which means either 150' of 5/16 or 100' of 3/8. - 9500HS will have 100' 5/16 and HS9500i will have 125' 5/16.

My supplier quoted me $500 Cdn ($350us) for a new 8274 motor.

I believe that Warn has changed the brake on the 9500i to using six pads instead of the old style of three pads nowadays...

I still got three in mine but will be changing it out shortly as its pretty much toast...we'll see if 6 pads makes a difference.

I look at it like the 8274 is old tech and the HS9500 is new tech. One is nostalgic and one is new. Both work great.

I bought a HS9500I. I worked it good a few weeks ago during a snow run. I am VERY impressed.

I have done some VERY hard pulls with the 8274. I also have a Ramsey 12000. I now run only with the 8274. Why? Because I extended the drum to 14 inches. 150 Ft of 3/8 rope is on now with only about 3 wraps. I could easily put on 300 ft if needed. Can that be done with a 9500? :D

I have an HS9500 for the Explorer and I'm buying an 8274 from a friend for the Willys.

My 9500 is brand new in the box but I've had it for a year and a half. How do I tell if it has the new brakes or the old?

I wanted a 8274, but after getting one, i did not like it, it blocked off to much of my radiator (EB's run hot enough as it is), i switched out to the HS9500i, love it, small, compact, fast, work great

DIFFERANT IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER!
Just because you have something that everyone else does not does not mean it is the best.... any WARN is the best all others fail in comparison to relibility warranty claims, etc....
whatever you get I do not care but damn get rid of that ramsey

So you are not buying the 8274 ? ...
This should be interesting. There is one guy in our tellico group that runs some other winch, he will be glad to have someone else share the heat...
Those 8274 are overrated anyway. I bought mine (used) just 15 years ago, and now it's already starting to give me some crap.... the other day I was chained off to a tree pulling a 10,000 lb. forklift thru 18" of mud, and the bit*h jumped out of gear a couple times ! WTF ?...

badassjeepguy, you need the winch we have at work. I don't know who makes it but it's badass. I know it's a 45,000 k and has about 1,800 ft of line on it. It has 2 speeds, power out, and free spool. I've used it to pull a 25,000 k line truck out of the mud and it drug the truck 6 ft backwards with the outriggers down doing it. The only problem is I don't think it will fit on the front of your jeep. It would take up the entire back seat. One nice thing about it is the roller fairlead at the drum that guides the cable back on the drum nice and even. :D

Bwa ha ha ha :D Good one!

How long has the HS9500i been around...what's the oldest one doing now?

Dad has the 8274's older brother...still doing daily farm duty on the front of the old Land Rover

And look at it this way...the 8274 is so bulletproof simple that

a) dirtrod likes it, and
b) even I couldn't overcomplicate a complete tear down and rebuild.

Now if that's not a "Siskel and Ebert" style 2 thumbs up, I don't know what is.
