: Bigger tires, bigger axles?

Alright, I have been running my combo of 44s front and rear for a year now with no breakage on 35s. I have superiors in the rear. ARB front, detroit rear. I am going up to 38" SXs which measure about 36.75" and I am starting to worry. I am not a throttle jockey wheeler. I enjoy the strategy of not having to pound a rig up an obstacle. So, should I start plans to build a 35 spline 9" or shuld I not worry about it? THe front is stock shafts with 760s, so I am considering going to superiors and CTMs up front as well. I figure for what I could sell my rear 44 for with a detroit, discs, alloys, and complete I should be able to offset most of my cost for the new rear axle, but wanted to get opinions first. Any thoughts? I have to admit, the idea of not having to think about my shafts every time I wheels sounds appealing.....

how offen do you break axle shafts??

if no broken parts....might just be money ahead to keep what you have, maybe look into going full float, and putting a over the top truss.
doing up a 9in will cost big money...at least what i am doing, 9in w/detroit,aloy axles,hi9 third member, disk brakes,

I havent broken any yet- (crossing fingers)
I wasnt planning on going hi9, just keeping it standard, that cost isnt terrible considering what I could get outta what I got now. THat was my thought at least....

if you go with a 9in axle you must get the hi9 third member,
stock is about 2.75 below axle CL, hi9 is 2.75 above CL.
drive shaft angles are much better and the pinion is up out of harms way.

but if you go full float on the D44 and do a over the top truss (check out missouri off road outfitters) name is something like that.
they have a very good bolt on top truss.

pending on who you talk to some will say go dana 60's front and rear.
but then i am trying to keep weght down.

I am currently looking into getting a rear 60 right now, just considering my options. Thanks for your thoughts.

depending on vehicle weight and skinny pedal use you might be able to make them live. I run 44s f&r on my cj with 37" Claws and heavy trailread beadlocks. Alloys front and rear. no breakage yet (one ujoint cap but...)

no excuses

I would get rid of the 44's and get some toy axles with 30 spline Longs :flipoff2:

You might consider the fact that if your going to larger tires, that the vehicle is going to get hard to steer (if it isn't already) in which case your going to want hydro asisted or full hydro some time in the future to help your steering problem. If this is the case then the D44's with 38" tires are apt to have some major breakage when hydrolic forces are trying to force them to turn..

Just something to consider...

I have crossover steering with PSC assist waiting to go in. I think it will be fine. Thanks for your input.
