: 60 series rear disc brakes?
muddogbob 03-14-2002, 11:29 AM I have been looking around for a complete rear disc brake kit for my FJ62 for a while now, and I have not found much. Downey's add says they have a kit for 60 series, and there was another small business in TT that sold a kit. Neither of these business have websites. I was just wondering who if anybody had done a rear disc brake conversion on their 60 series, and what they used for parts?
Medusa 03-14-2002, 11:58 AM TSM has kits for the FJ60 and a website (http://www.tsmmfg.com/Toyota%20Truck%20others.htm)

morgan 03-14-2002, 01:29 PM Why do rear disc brakes for the 60?
The 60 rear disc brakes are pretty good, self-adjusting and they only have one brake cylinder. 40/45/55 rear drums suck, but it's my impression (don't own a 60) that the 60 rears were good enough for big tires and hard wheeling. Am I wrong?

ginericfj80 03-14-2002, 01:46 PM I don't think my 60 stops nearly as quick as it should. I'm still running the rear self adjusting drums. It isn't that I have any problems it is just not a quick stop. On the trail it isn't an issue. My primary problems are in stop and go traffic at 45-55 mph. I'm only running 33s right now. When I tried a friend's 35s it was much worse.
gunracer1 03-14-2002, 02:39 PM what i need to know is, will the bracket for a 40 work on a 62 rear. i have a layout of the 40 bracket, i just don't know if it will work on mine. thanks mike
BJ On Roids 03-14-2002, 02:44 PM a late model 40 bracket will work with your 60/62
but the early ones wont
..my rear discs, my diffs are 60 series and brackets are late 40 brackets
this kit uses, factory front caliper and front rotors froma cruiser
(i haev replaced the discs with brand new items, at the moment...so these photos are of the old ones, and they hand tbeen used in ages, so look rusty but its all good
BJ On Roids 03-14-2002, 02:59 PM forgot to attach pics...
if i could figure out how to save as less than 640x640
my paint program is only letting me save as .bmp and .dib
or soemthing not as jpeg :(
BJ On Roids 03-14-2002, 03:05 PM saved it with some colour loss or something and it should fit now...lets see
(remember to just look at the bracket...ignore everything else, oh yeah and it plugs into the standard rear brake line)
(i also have full floating axles)
GRRRRR.cant attach BMP
only jpg.jpeg.gif are allowed to be uploaded, and has to be smaller than 640x640
going to plan B
gimme hour or so
BJ On Roids 03-14-2002, 03:41 PM with a little help (thanks morgan)
here we go
morgan 03-14-2002, 04:00 PM So, what kit is that BJ42?

True, the drums are decently sized and do a good job stopping a stock 60 on the road. But being drums, they have problems with C-clip axles when they break... Had a buddy roll his vehicle on a hill when the rear axle broke, slid past the drum and he effectively had no brakes... Not a pretty end to a great truck (not to mention a near-major-hurt experience).
My only issue with trying to find a good RDB setup for my 60 is an effective e-brake system... I just don't trust line-locks or t-case brakes. :D
60seriesguy 03-14-2002, 05:33 PM Morgan, I've been fighting with the rear brakes on my FJ62 since I went to 35's, no amount of adjustment seems good enough, they just don't hold that big beast on steep inclines. I just spent a whole Saturday a couple of weeks ago taking the rear brakes apart, cleaning them (replaced one leaky wheel cylinder), adjusting them. It was *better*, but nothing to write home about, certainly not as good as it used to be.
*MY* beef with RDB conversion on the 60 series is that I don't want to fiddle around with the e-brake, which seems a weak link in the conversion. Almost everyone I talk to seems to have had some problem with it...
Reorx, are you talking about Hunter's truck? What was he doing when he broke the rear axle? I'm curious....
BJ On Roids 03-14-2002, 07:48 PM e-brake, took an afternoon to fit, is self centering and cleans itself and can stall a BUILT 2H with turbo charger, it really works KILLER and im more than happy with it
the full floaters are factory over here on all criuser from 74 onwards, sortof, you just gotta be smart, and the conversion to full float if you dont have it is easy enough
the rears are AWESOME (no more line locks though) ;) cause they work better than the drums and you end up just driving forwards and leaving skid tracks everywhere. also factory pads and all fit (common gear over here too)
and the e-brake was easy and will easy hole a 60 on a hill
the kit is from a local engineering shop has about 30 or so running around my local area, has the 4 bolt and the 8 bolt brackets available
and you never touch another drum brake....gawd i h8 drums with a passion (lots of mud driving, and you too will hate drums)
e-brake pic, i only use one caliper, we toyed with 2 thinking it would stop better, then disconnected one to see how well it would work, 2 calieprs will hold car and loaded trailer uphill. i am still very frightened of it and steer into the gutter (i park on a hill every noght) and i leave it in gear, but it holds...so it surprised even me!!
BJ On Roids 03-14-2002, 07:50 PM 1 more for you guys that havent seen it yet (its been up here a few times before)

dude come to Queensland, in Oz, ill even help you fit all the stuff, then do some touring, and ill show you where the wheeling is at
;)

I wasn't there, but did see the video (we talked about it on our mail-list for quite a while)... Looks like a fairly easy hill, though it was a little bumpy which probably was the culprit for the axle snapping as he was having to rev the 2F... Basically it snapped while he was going up (but he didn't realize it), so he backed up a bit to get a better run and the broken end rolled outta the drum, giving him only front-brakes... Not a great situation facing up on a hill, and he started sliding backwards, hit a dip and it rolled... looked pretty bad on the video...
Made me real interested in getting something to keep the axles in there on the back...
Oh, and the Aussies are gonna laugh at us here in the USA with our C-clip wonders... :p :D

semi floating axles in commercial vehicles and vehicles over a set weight were banned (made illegal) im pretty sure thats why we get full floaters, but there is always trade offs
you guys got front discs 5 years before us (1975) we got ours in 1980...and you guys get those granny trannies, which we find it harder to come across.
morgan 03-14-2002, 09:11 PM BJ42, tell me where you got the bracket for your rear FF, to mount the toy calipers?
I'm gonna be using this FJ75 axle for the rear, and if I find the drum brakes don't cut it with big tires, I'd like to be able to put discs on it.

What's the price on the e-brake kit?
BJ On Roids 03-15-2002, 03:48 PM local machine shop, they charge i think Oz $550 with hubs, calipers, rotors...i think. so its basically bolt on.
the e-brake is $350 plus cable about $13 at repco (from a 1979-1980 BJ40 with handbrake on floor and handbrake on t-case (for my model) some of you guys may have a t-case drum already and just use the same cable
